Ricky Barnes Finishes in 21st Place at The Masters
April 13, 2003
AUGUSTA, Ga. - For 72 holes, the University of Arizona's Ricky Barnes stood toe-to-toe with golf's greatest players at its most prestigious event and did not back down in finishing in 21st place Sunday at the 67th annual Masters Tournament.
Barnes, a senior from Stockton, Calif., posted a final-round 73 (+1) Sunday to finish in 21st place with a four-round total of 291 (+3). He finished 10 strokes behind eventual winner Mike Weir, who needed a one-hole sudden death playoff to defeat Len Mattiace, at 281 (-7).
One of three amateurs to make the 36-hole cut, Barnes' 291 total qualified him as the low-finishing amateur. Ultimately, his 291 total was one stroke away from qualifying for the 2004 Masters, as the top 16 finishers plus ties automatically qualifies for next year's event. That exemption included players at 290 (+2) or better.
It was the second solid PGA Tour finish for the reigning U.S. Amateur Champion this season, who on March 2 finished tied for 18th place at the Chrysler Classic of Tucson.
Barnes registered two birdies and 13 pars and three bogeys in Sunday's final round. He was as low as one-over for the event through No. 13 Sunday, but bogeyed two of the next four holes. Over his four rounds played, Barnes 13 birdies and 45 pars on the historic course designed by Bobby Jones and Alister MacKenzie.
As the low-finishing amateur, Barnes was present in Butler Cabin for the revered presentation of the Green Jacket along with CBS Sports' Jim Nantz, Hootie Johnson, Chairman of The Masters, Weir and Tiger Woods, the 2002 champion.
Through nine scoring events this collegiate season, Barnes boasts a 71.56 scoring average and has earned six top-10 finishes. He has led Arizona to four tournament championships in its last five events.
Barnes joined former University of Arizona standout Jim Furyk on the leader board. Furyk finished in fourth place at 284 (-4), which equaled his best Masters finish in eight career appearances.
