Trojans Complete Pac-10 Series Sweep Against The Bruins
April 13, 2003
LOS ANGELES - Spencer Gordon's solo home run to left in the bottom of the sixth broke a 5-5 tie Sunday and the USC Trojans completed the Pac-10 Conference series sweep with an 8-5 win against the UCLA Bruins at Dedeaux Field. The Trojans won their first Sunday game since Feb. 16 and first series since Feb. 14-16 (a sweep at home against South Alabama). USC won four of six games in the season series against UCLA to earn all five points in the season-long Lexus Gauntlet competition.
The Trojans improve to 18-17 overall and are now tied for third place in the Pac-10, along with Arizona, with a 5-4 mark. The Bruins fell to 17-22 overall and 3-6 in conference, dropping their sixth straight game.
Gordon finished the weekend with a .667 average (6-for-9) with five runs scored, two home runs and six RBI.
Freshman Jeff Clement hit his 16th home run of the season with a solo shot to right in the eighth. He is now tied for 13th with five players on USC's all-time single-season list for most home runs. Clement went 3-for-4 with an RBI and finished the series with a .538 average (7-for-13). He also has a 12-game hitting streak (.444, 24-for-54) and is hitting .517 in his last seven games (15-for-29).
Preston Griffin and Brett McMillan had three hits each for the Bruins.
The Bruins scored a run in the first after back-to-back errors by USC shortstop Anthony Lunetta. With the bases loaded, starter Anthony Reyes struck out Chris Jensen to end the inning. Reyes in his second appearance since Feb. 14 went three innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits with no walks and three strikeouts in the prearranged start.
A walk to leadoff hitter Michael Moon and single to left by Clement on the 'Barry Bonds'-type defensive shift put runners at first and second in the bottom of the Trojan first. First baseman Joey Metropoulos hit an 0-2 pitch from Casey Janssen over the fence in left field for a three-run homer, his eighth of the season.
Down 4-3, the Bruins took the lead in the fourth when Jensen led off the inning with his first homerun of the season to right. An RBI single by McMillan put the Bruins ahead. The Trojans tied the game in the fourth when freshman designated hitter Baron Frost hit an RBI groundout, plating Jon Brewster.
Gordon hit his third home run of the season in the sixth and second in as many days.
Fraser Dizard (5-2) earned the win for the Trojans with four innings of relief, allowing two runs on four hits with no walks and six strikeouts. Dizard allowed both runs in the fourth inning, but retired seven batters in a row and struck out the side in the sixth.
The Trojans' Bret Butler picked up his third save with two scoreless innings. Janssen (3-4) took the loss for the Bruins, going six innings and allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits with three walks and six strikeouts.
USC will travel to Loyola Marymount on Tuesday (April 15) at 2:30 p.m. before a Pac-10 series at California, beginning on Thursday (April 17) at 2 p.m. All four games next week will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
