Kriz Named Pac-10 Men's Field Event Athlete of the Week
April 14, 2003
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - In the first edition of the Pac-10 Track and Field Athletes of the Week, University of Oregon redshirt senior Adam Kriz was honored in the Men's Field Event category Monday.
The Toledo, Ore. native raised his hammer throw personal best by six feet, 10 inches in last Saturday's Pepsi Team Invitational (first, 217-10) - his second improvement this outdoor season in three appearances. Kriz's mark will likely move him into the collegiate top-10 national rankings this week, and also up two spots to fifth all-time on the Oregon all-time charts.
Kriz also helped propel the Ducks to the team win in the four-way scored meet, with points in the shot put (third, 48-3 1/2) and discus (seventh, 145-8). Oregon tallied 211 points to edge returning Big-10 outdoor team champion Minnesota (second, 171), Washington (third, 113) and Colorado (fourth, 108).
Kriz entered the 2003 season with a hammer personal best of 210-7 that won the 2002 Pac-10 title - nearly a then-three-foot personal best and once place better than his pre-meet seeding (second). At the national level, he was an NCAA participant in the hammer outdoors in 2002 (14th, 200-7) and indoors in the weight throw in 2003 (15th, 64-9 1/4).
Kriz is under the guidance of first-year volunteer throws coach Lance Deal, a four-time Olympian in the hammer and silver medalist in 1996 in Atlanta, and the U.S. record holder in the event.
Kriz is the fifth current Duck on the men's and women's teams that has been honored in one of the four event categories, joining former honorees seniors Santiago Lorenzo and John Stiegeler, and juniors Trevor Woods and Sarah Malone.
