Rain Shortens No. 10 Cal's 4-0 Win Past Santa Clara
April 16, 2003
The tenth-ranked California softball team shut out Santa Clara, 4-0, Wednesday afternoon at Levine-Fricke Field as the game was called in the bottom of the sixth with one out and one runner left on base due to rain. With the non-conference win, the Golden Bears improve to 35-12 as the Broncos fall to 20-19 overall.
Cal scored its first run of the game off a fourth inning lead off solo home run to right center by senior Courtney Scott, her third of the season.
The Bears loaded the bases in the fifth with no outs off a hit batter and two consecutive walks, followed by a short rain delay. After the delay, center fielder Kaleo Eldredge stepped to the plate, sailing a 2 RBI single down the left field line that scored third baseman Vicky Galindo and designated player Kristen Morley. Next up, Scott belted a pitch that stung the left field wall on a line drive, scoring left fielder Lindsay James from second base for an eventual final score of 4-0.
Sophomore hurler Cassie Bobrow dominated the Broncos' bats, allowing just two hits in 6.0 innings, fanning two batters and walking one to improve to 4-0 for the season. Jaime Forman-Lau took the loss, tossing 5.1 innings, allowing five hits, four earned runs, five walks and three strikeouts.
Scott led the offensive attack for the Bears, batting 2-for-3 (HR, 2 RBI, run). Cal left eight runners on base to Santa Clara's three.
Next up, the Bears travel to Stanford Friday, April 19 at 7 p.m. for the first of three games in the series. The game will be televised on the Media Center, tape delayed on Sunday at 8 p.m.
