Bears Meet Several Qualifying Standards After Day One at Mt. SAC Relays
April 17, 2003
Senior Leora Ward and freshman Danielle Navarre were the University of California track and field teams' highest finishers at the Mt. SAC Relays, tying for third in the pole vault with a mark of 12-0. The meet, held at Mt. San Antonio Community College in Walnut, Calif., continues through Saturday.
For Navarre, the 12-0 mark matches a season best, while Ward's best vault this season was a 12-1.5 mark set during the indoor season. That mark qualifies both Navarre and Ward for the NCAA regional. Freshman Christy Borak and sophomore Girmay Guangul were the only other Golden Bears to best postseason qualifying standards. Guangul clocked a 14:24.17 finish in the 5000 meters meeting NCAA regional and Pac-10 championship standards and Borak finished the 5000 meters in a season-best time of 17:16.97 to also qualify for Pac-10s.
In other action, redshirt freshman Qadriyyah Abdullah finished 10th in the long jump (16-11.50), while fellow frosh Kurt Seefeld claimed fourth place in the discus with a throw of 162-11. In the 3,000m steeplechase, sophomore Abby Parker placed 15th in 11:01.89, while senior Martin Conrad placed 13th in 9:15.89.
