Women's Tennis Finishes Regular Season in San Diego
April 17, 2003
EUGENE - The No. 38 Oregon women's tennis team will finish its regular season this weekend with a pair of road matches against ranked opponents in San Diego, Calif. The Ducks (10-13, 2-6) will play No. 25 San Diego State at 2 p.m. on Friday, then will play No. 63 San Diego Saturday at 10 a.m.
The road trip could go a long way in improving Oregon's chances to play in the NCAA Championships. If the Ducks can win one or both matches over the weekend, their chances of playing after next week's Pac-10 Championships will significantly increase. Oregon has already notched several quality wins this season, including victories against Pac-10 opponents Arizona and Washington State, as well as a victory against Illinois.
Sophomore Daria Panova is still ranked No. 17 in the nation, and appears to have finally overcome her nagging knee injuries. Junior Courtney Nagle is ranked No. 44 in singles play and teams with Panova to form the No. 28-ranked doubles tandem in the country.
Freshman Jamie Marshall, who injured her ankle in a match against Washington one month ago, is healed and is expected to play in both matches this weekend.
The Ducks will play in the Pac-10 Championships in Ojai, Calif., beginning Thursday, April 24. Panova will try and add the outdoor singles championship to the indoor championship she won in January.
