Mississippi Star Signs with Jay John

April 18, 2003

Corvallis, Ore. - Kenny Hooks from Moss Point High School in Moss Point, Miss., has signed a national letter on intent to play men's basketball at Oregon State University, Beaver head coach Jay John announced Friday afternoon.

Hooks is a 6-foot-7 forward who was the Biloxi Sun Herald Player of the Year after averaging 25 points, 10 rebounds, and 4.5 blocked shots. He also holds a cumulative GPA of 3.6, which is among the top 10 in a class of approximately 250 students.

'Kenny reminds me a lot of Lamar Hurd in terms of being the complete student-athlete,' John said. 'He's an excellent student, he's a classy individual, and he wants to attend Oregon State University.'

Hooks led Moss Point to the 5A state tournament semifinals last month, before falling to eventual state champion Vicksburg. He scored 35 points in a first round tournament game vs. Oak Grove High School, including 25 in the first half.

'We knew he was an outstanding player and a fine athlete,' Oak Grove head coach Anthony Stallings said of Hooks. 'It was our intention to try and stop him, but every time we gave him an inch he stretched it into a mile.'

Hooks was rated 14th at wing forward by Prepspotlight.com prior to his senior year. He also recently scored the winning basket in the 13th annual Alabama-Mississippi All-Star game.

'I'm frankly shocked Kenny was still available,' John said. 'He is a very complete player. I keep saying one of our goals is to elevate this program in terms of talent, Kenny certainly does that. He will make an impact, he can do just about everything on the basketball court.'

Hooks is also a standout pitcher on the baseball team, and was scheduled to start Friday's state tournament game.

The signing of Hooks completes this year's signing class.
