No. 20 Softball Uses Perfect Defense To Beat Beavers, 2-1
April 18, 2003
EUGENE - For the second time in two weeks, Oregon freshman shortstop Breanne Sabol turned a dynamic double play to lift the Ducks to victory as No. 20 Oregon defeated Oregon State, 2-1, in front of 403 fans at Howe Field Friday. The Ducks (24-13 overall) are now 12-3 in one-run games this season and freshman pitcher Amy Harris earned the win to improve to 11-9 this season. Oregon State fell to 25-22, 1-10 with the loss.
'We've been in this situation so many times this season that I think our team has a lot of confidence,' Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. 'We always feel like we're going to make the big play or get the key hit in these close games.'
Oregon State pinch hitter Erin Bequette singled to lead off the seventh inning before Breynnen Guthrie lined out to Sabol, who quickly turned and threw to first to pick off Bequette to end the game.
The Beavers did have the early lead in the game after designated player Lisa Allen scored on a single just over Sabol's head by Guthrie to put the Beavers ahead 1-0 in the top of the third inning.
The Ducks responded in the bottom of the inning, rallying with two outs to take a 2-1 lead after Sabol singled and later scored on a single by Lynsey Haij. Oregon freshman Beth Boskovich then drove in senior Amber Hutchison with a single to left field.
Senior Andrea Vidlund picked up her sixth save of the season - which now puts her tied for second in the Pac-10 for saves in a season - after relieving Harris in the sixth.
Oregon is now 2-0 vs. Oregon State this season and host the Beavers in the final game of the series tomorrow at 2 p.m.
