April 18, 2003

LOS ANGELES - In the second of three days in their busiest weekend of the season, the Duck men's and women's track and field teams entered athletes in three Los Angeles-area meets Friday.

On the men's side at Mt. SAC in the 800, freshman Jan Olszowy (19th, 1:51.28) lowered his outdoor season best by .36 seconds, and finished a second ahead of fellow Duck frosh Ryan Flaherty (38th, 1:52.51). Both finished just shy of the regional mark of 1:51.15. Arkansas runner Mike Taylor posted the day's fastest time (1:47.89).

In the 1,500, redshirt sophomore Noel Paulson took fifth in the fourth of seven sections of the 1,500 (3:52.62). Indiana's John Jefferson posted the day's fastest time in a separate section (3:41.53).

On the women's side in the Long Beach State Invitational, redshirt junior Abby Andrus led a Duck 1-2 sweep in the 400 hurdles (first, 59.90) with a .34-second personal best and now ranks sixth all-time in Oregon history. In her wake, sophomore teammate Kayla Mellott (second, 61.30) posted her first career Pac-10 and Regional qualifying marks and now ranks ninth in school history, and redshirt junior C'Rel McAllister followed close behind (fourth, 63.70) with a.65-second season best.

In the field events, sophomore triple jumper Clarice Hayward-Lee upped her windy career best on her first and best jump of the afternoon (second, 39-10 1/2 (w:+2.9)), and was edged only by Montana's Renee Dunn (first, 40-10 1/2w).

Other Duck sprint and middle distance entries from the Long Beach included senior Heather Murtaugh (100, fifth, 12.11w (w:+2.7)), redshirt freshman Sara Schaaf (200, fourth, 25.67; 400, third, 57.14) and sophomore Michelle Donovan (800, third, 2:18.29)

In action in the Mt. SAC Relays in nearby Walnut, Calif., senior Janette Davis won the fourth of five sections in the 400 (54.57) - less than a half-second off her personal best from last weekend (54.11). Her time Friday ranked second-fastest overall of the day behind the final heat winner Tiffany Giles (time unavailable).

In the 1,500, redshirt sophomore Laura Harmon (second, 4:31.31) and Eri Macdonald (third, 4:34.72) claimed season bests and Pac-10 qualifiers, and were just shy of the Regional qualifying mark (4:31.00).

In the field events, senior Jordan Sauvage took third in the hammer (184-6).

Limited results were available from the women's other action in the Pomona Pitzer Invitational in Claremont, Calif., as sophomore Hannah Moore became the fifth Duck pole vaulter this season to qualify for the Pac-10 and Regional Championships with a personal best of 12-5 1/2 (her place was unavailable).

'It was a really good day,' Oregon women's coach Tom Heinonen said. 'Our first day here is usually a really good one, since we have people competing at appropriate levels where they get challenged and they respond. Janette ran a great effort out of lane nine, and into a serious headwind on the backstretch on a day where it was cool, and everybody was wearing lots of clothes. Overall, we feel really good about most of what happened today, and we'll see what we can do tomorrow with the remaining big guns.'

Besides Moore's women's pole vault mark, remaining results from the Pomona Pitzer Invitational weren't available. The meet web site - www.physical_education.pomona.edu/xc&track/meetres.html - wasn't updated as of 11 pm Saturday night (PT).

Full Long Beach State Invitational results are available at the http://www.longbeachstate.com/trk/trk/STATS03/meet041803.html web site, and Mt. SAC Relays results are supposed to be posted to the http://relays.mtsac.edu/2003/index.htm web site.

Looking ahead to Saturday's final day action in the Mt. SAC Relays, tentative Duck entries include pole vaulters Niki McEwen, Becky Holliday and Kirsten Riley, javelin thrower Elisa Crumley, high jumper Jenny Brogdon, and triple jumper Amanda Brown, and men's sprinter Samie Parker and hurdler Eric Mitchum.
