No. 1 Cal Streaks Past Oregon State

April 19, 2003

REDWOOD SHORES - The California women's crew proved they deserved a No. 1 ranking by handily winning all of their races versus Oregon State Saturday. Every race was decided by more than a length and the closest was the most important of the day. The varsity eight never trailed from the start, sprinting to a six seat lead at the 1000 meter mark. Oregon State never backed off though and pushed the Bears hard down the stretch. The Bears responded by moving ahead and winning by 3.3 seconds.

The Women's second varsity eight also won by a large margin of 15 seconds. The varsity four, varsity four-B, novice eight, and 2nd novice eight also completed victories all winning by more than eight seconds. Cal's 3rd varsity eight raced Santa Clara's varsity and won by more than eighteen seconds.

'Our varsity Eight is a crew that does not quit.' Cal Coach Dave O'Neill commented after the race. 'They have been doing what it takes to win, and they held off a tough Oregon State crew today. I think they are coming into their own.'
