Parker Joins Oregon Top-10 List in 100-meter-dash

April 19, 2003

WALNUT, Calif. - The University of Oregon men's and women's track and field teams saved their best performances for last in Saturday's final day action in the Mt. SAC Relays as two-time All-American Samie Parker made his debut on the all-time Oregon men's list in the 100-meter-dash at the seventh position.

The Duck senior clocked a .18-second personal best in the Olympic Development section (sixth, 10.43, w:+0.5) to meet the Regional (10.50) and Pac-10 (10.74) qualifying standards. Earlier in the day, the Long Beach Calif., native also competed in the event's open section, and clocked 10.72 into a -2.5 meter per second headwind and ranked sixth overall.

In the 110 hurdles, freshman Eric Mitchum took sixth in the Olympic Development section (14.23, wind: -0.9), in an event won by Nike's William Erese (13.71). Duck senior Terry Ellis ran in the event's open section, and ranked 16th overall (14.65).

In the 400 hurdles, Pac-10 champion and junior Brandon Holliday and freshman Matt Scherer ranked 24th (53.17) and 26th overall (53.51), respectively.

The Duck men also entered 4x100 (fifth, 41.23) and 4x400 (sixth, 3:11.90) and missed season bests in both by .06 and .03 seconds, respectively.

In the field, Pac-10 hammer champion and redshirt senior Adam Kriz ranked third among collegians and 14th overall (206-9). Senior James March added 10th in the shot put (51-9).

On the women's side, redshirt senior Becky Holliday upped her school pole vault record in the pole vault by two inches. The three-time Duck All-American finished second Saturday (14-5 1/4) with the same mark but more misses as post-collegian and former UCLA NCAA champion Tracy O'Hara who won the event with a season best.

Holliday's mark improved on her previous Duck outdoor best of 14-3 1/4 which won the Pepsi Team Invitational at Hayward Field last weekend, and was four inches higher than her preseason outdoor school record from the 2002 edition of the Mt. SAC Relays (fourth, 14-1 1/4). Holliday also owns the Duck indoor school record of 14-3 1/4 which netted her second place in March's 2003 NCAA Indoor Championships.

On the 2003 U.S. outdoor season best lists, Holliday now climbs to a tie for third place, and second-best among collegians, trailing Nike's Stacy Dragila (15-8 1/4) and Florida State sophomore and NCAA indoor champion Lacy Janson (14-7 1/4).

Also in the pole vault, redshirt senior and three-time All-American Niki McEwen followed in a tie for sixth place (13-5 1/4), with Oregon's third invite in the invitational section - junior Kirsten Riley - tying for 11th (12-7 1/2).

In other field event action, senior Amanda Brown posted her third-best ever mark in the triple jump (second, 40-7 3/4), and senior high jumper Jenny Brogdon jumped her season best mark (second, 5-7) for the fourth time this outdoor season. In the throws circles, senior Mary Etter took seventh in the invitational discus (169-2) and 15th in the university shot put (45-1 3/4). On the track, senior Heather Murtaugh ranked 15th overall the University/Open 100 (12.13w, w:+2.1).

'Overall it was a good weekend,' Oregon women's coach Tom Heinonen said. 'Amanda continues to show that she's a consistent 40-foot triple jumper. Elisa again threw in the 150s in the javelin off some shortened approaches that she tinkered with during the meet. Jenny got her high jump season best again and had a couple good jumps at 5-8 3/4. In the 100, Heather had an adequate start and adjusted with a strong finish. As a team, we're eager to get home and compete in the Oregon Invitational next weekend.'

Looking ahead, the Duck men and women return home to compete in the Oregon Invitational this week. The meet kicks off with a decathlon and heptathlon on Thu.-Fri., April 24-25, with the men's and women's 10,000-meters races also held Friday evening at 7:15 pm. A majority of the meet action follows in a dual-session affair Saturday, April 26, with the morning session beginning at approximately 10 am, and the afternoon session starting at 3 pm.
