April 19, 2003
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Stanford men's tennis team clinched its 14th Pacific-10 Conference title, and sixth in the last seven years, with a 7-0 victory at USC on Saturday afternoon at the Marks Tennis Stadium.
The fifth-ranked Cardinal, which is 21-3 overall, finished Pac-10 play with a perfect 7-0 record, including a 4-3 win at third-ranked UCLA on Friday. Twenty-first ranked USC dropped to 13-11 and 2-5.
On Saturday, Stanford posted its second 7-0 win over the defending NCAA Champion Trojans in as many tries this season in dominant fashion.
The Cardinal won five of the six singles matches in straight sets, and dropped seven games or less in each of those matches. In the only contest to go three sets, the Cardinal's 12th-ranked David Martin (Tulsa, OK) posted an impressive 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-3) win over 53rd-ranked Prakash Amritraj.
The doubles competition was more of the same, as Stanford won all three matches. At No. 2, freshmen KC Corkery (Manhattan Beach, CA) and James Pade (Woodside, CA) recorded their 25th victory of the season by defeating Daniel Langre and Johan Berg 8-4.
The Cardinal returns to action at the Pac-10 Individual Championships on Thursday-Sunday in Ojai, California.
