Ellis Ties for Second as Ducks Climb to Fifth
April 20, 2003
STANFORD, Calif. - John Ellis shot a 3-under 68 to lead the Oregon men's golf team to a fifth place finish after the final round of the U.S. Intercollegiate, played Sunday at the par-71, 6,786-yard Stanford Golf Course.
Ellis, a senior from San Jose, Calif., finished the tournament tied for second with UC Irvine's Jeff Coburn at 6-under 207 following rounds of 67-72-68. It was the fifth top 10 finish of the season for Ellis. San Diego State's Mark Warman took individual medalist honors at 206.
'John played very, very well again today,' said Oregon coach Steve Nosler. 'He had a very solid tournament.'
As a team, the Ducks shot a 4-over 288 Sunday to move up one spot in the final standings to fifth at 856. Oregon passed UC Irvine, a team ranked above the Ducks in the latest District 8 poll, by three strokes. The Anteaters shot 292 Sunday to finish at 859. It was Oregon's third top five finish in its last five tournaments. The Ducks were third at their own Oregon Duck Invitational last month and finished fourth at the Western Intercollegiate two weeks ago.
No. 11 UCLA won the event at 840, followed by No. 8 Oklahoma State at 850, San Diego State at 851 and Fresno State at 853.
Oregon's Chris Carnahan tied for 12th at 212. Rounds of 70-70-72 gave the senior from Albany, Ore., his best finish of the spring. Junior Jimmy White posted the second-best finish of his career by tying for 22nd at 215. It was the junior from Eugene's best finish since tying for 12th at the Northwest Collegiate during the fall of his freshman season and was just two stokes off his career low tournament score.
'Over the last couple of tournaments, we've had all six players that we're taking to Pac-10's have some pretty good events,' said Nosler. 'I'm real happy for Jimmy with the way he played again today.'
The Ducks return to action for the Pac-10 tournament April 28-30 at Oakmont Country Club in Glendale, Calif.
