April 22, 2003
EUGENE - The 20th-ranked University of Oregon softball team used another balanced offensive and defensive effort to shutout Nevada, 4-0, in the second game of a doubleheader at Howe Field in Eugene Tuesday afternoon. The Ducks hit three home runs in the second game and had five total in the two games, defeating the Wolfpack 6-1 in the first game. With the win, Oregon improves to 26-14 overall, 4-8 Pacific-10 Conference heading into games versus No. 1 Arizona and No. 11 Arizona State this weekend.
'I'm very pleased with how we played today,' Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. 'We needed to put together back-to-back games and I thought we did that. Our pitching was outstanding and we were also very strong offensively.'
Freshman shortstop Breanne Sabol hit her first career home run in the second inning, driving in sophomore Erin Goodell to give Oregon an early 2-0 lead. Senior Lynsey Haij and freshman Beth Boskovich hit back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning to extend Oregon's lead to 4-0. Sabol, who finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, added a double in the fourth to lead Oregon offensively.
Junior pitcher Anissa Meashintubby (4-3) picked up the win for the Ducks, striking out seven batters - including the first six she faced - and allowed just one hit in four innings pitched. Meashintubby is now seventh all-time at Oregon with 195 career strikeouts.
Oregon senior Andrea Vidlund was 4-for-4 in the two games with a home run, a double, three RBI and two runs scored. Vidlund now leads the team with a .340 average and is six home runs shy of the school record.
The Ducks host top-ranked Arizona Friday at 2 p.m.
