OSU Has A Two-For-Tuesday at Portland

April 22, 2003

PORTLAND, Ore. - Oregon State tied a school record by hitting 10 doubles as the Beavers beat Portland 14-4 in non-league baseball Tuesday afternoon at Pilot Stadium. Paul Richie tied the individual record for doubles in a game by hitting three, with two of those coming in the Beavers' nine-run sixth inning.

OSU (18-19 overall, 4-8 Pacific-10) will be at home this weekend for a Pac-10 series against Southern California with games Friday at 5 p.m., Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. All three games can be heard on KEJO-AM (1240).

At Portland (8-30-1, 4-13-1 West Coast), the Beavers had a two-for-Tuesday as their 10 doubles tied a record that had been set in a 15-4 win over Puget Sound in 1979. In addition to Richie's three doubles, Tony Calderon and Rob Recuenco had two each and Kane TenPas, Jacoby Ellsbury and Chris Kunda added one apiece.

'We came out a little flat offensively,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said of the Beavers, who were hitless until Seth Pietsch led off the top of the fourth inning with his eighth home run of the year for a 1-0 lead. 'But we responded over the next six innings. Some guys came out and picked it up for us.'

Portland tied the game at 2-2 with a pair of runs - one of them unearned - off sophomore righthander Kenny Anderson in the bottom of the fifth inning. But in the top of the sixth, OSU's first eight batters had hits against Pilot freshman righthander Josh Roberts, including a two-run double by Recuenco and run-scoring doubles by Richie and Ellsbury.

Richie added a two-run double to cap the inning and then had another double in the eighth; he tied a record that had been accomplished seven times previously, including earlier this year by Calderon and Chris Biles in separate games against Washington State.

On the day, Richie was 4-for-5 with four runs batted in to give him career-highs for both hits and RBIs. Just two weeks ago, the junior had seen some of his playing time slip away as freshman Billy Munich began starting games in Pac-10 play.

'Paul has played very well since he thought his job was in jeopardy,' Casey said. 'He's stepped up and played better and played sharper. He's a tough kid, and he didn't want to lose his job.'

Richie had hits in both games he started last weekend at Stanford and has hit safely in five of his last six games.

'It's been having a little more confidence in myself, and having a little competition,' Richie said. 'It's getting to be into the Pac-10 season, and you've got to raise the bar a little bit.'

OSU's big inning made a winner of Anderson, who improved his record to 2-3 this season. In five innings, he allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits and one walk while striking out four; he didn't give up a hit until that two-run fifth inning.

'Kenny was throwing all his pitches for strikes,' Richie said. 'He kept the ball down and he competed - he did a good job for us.'

The ninth-inning double that TenPas contributed to the record was the first hit of the junior's OSU career. Calderon's two doubles gave him 19 for the season, putting him in a tie for second place on the Beavers' all-time list of single-season leaders; the record is Pietsch's 24 doubles last season.
