Women's Golf Faces Conference Foes at Pacific-10 Championships

What's Happening This Week: The Washington State women's golf team heads to Corvallis, Ore., for the 2003 Pacific-10 Championships at the Par 72, 6,160 yard Trysting Tree Country Club April 22-24...teams will play 18 holes each day, with rounds beginning at 8:30 a.m. April 22-23, and 8 a.m. Saturday, April 24 for the final round.
Pac-10 Field: The 10-team field will consist of Stanford, Washington, Oregon State, Oregon, Cal, UCLA, USC, Arizona, Arizona State and Washington State...the pairings for the first day will be ASU, Washington, and UCLA in the first wave starting at tee No. 1, followed by Oregon and WSU, also in the first wave, starting at tee No. 10...the second wave will consist of Cal, Arizona, and USC at the No.1 tee, followed by Oregon State and Stanford at the No. 10 tee...pairings will be reordered for each round based on team scores.
Rankings: As of the final rankings released by the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index (Tuesday, April 22) before the Pac-10 Championships, the teams headed for play are in this national ranking order: USC (5th), Arizona (6th), Cal (8th), UCLA (13th), Washington (20th), Arizona State (27th), Stanford (28th), Oregon State (46th), WSU (64th), and Oregon (77th).
Last Year At The Pac-10 Championships: Washington State's best finisher was freshman Jay-Lee Longbottom who shot a 4-over 76 in the final round and finished tied for 17th (230, +14)...Donna Bell who shot a 1-over 73 turned in the Cougars' best performance of the final day...Washington State finished eighth, 20 strokes ahead of Oregon State and 28 shots better than Oregon.
Last Week At The Peg Barnard Collegiate: Led the third place tie by Jay-Lee Longbottom, the Washington State women's golf team finished in seventh place at the Peg Barnard California Collegiate at the Par 72, 5,960 yard Stanford Golf Course at Stanford, Calif....Longbottom shot rounds of 77 and 74 to earn third place, her highest finish of the season...Kim Welch and Maria Kostina continued to add accolades to their golfing resumes, as they each finished in a tie for 17th, with Kostina earning her sixth consecutive Top 25 finish, and Welch tying for third place all-time in career Top 25 finishes with Jill Johnson at 16...Stephanie Parsley finished in 66th place, followed by Lindsey Bogden in only her fourth event of the season finishing at 67th...as a team the Cougars average 319 over the two day tournament, and finished ahead of Pac-10 rival Oregon State.
Marking the Scorecard: The Cougars are ranked 61st in the Div. I head-to-head rankings on Golfstat.com...Kim Welch ranks 114th in the Golfweek/Sagarin individual performance index...Jay-Lee Longbottom is ranked tenth in fairways hit at .894 according to Golfstat.com.
Sq-Welch-ing The Competition: For the second time in her young collegiate career, Welch has been recognized with the College National Player of Week by GolfWorld magazine for their March 21 issue...Welch has been on a tear and already has matched her Top 10 total from last year and broken her Top 25 total finishes ...Welch is just one Top 10 finish away from breaking the career record set by Tasha Browner at 12...Welch is ranked 65th in the Women's Golfstat Cup, an award given to the best female golf performers by golfstat.com.
From Russia With Love: In her first three events as a Cougar, Kostina placed in the Top 3 every time with a tie for second at the Inland Collegiate, a second place finish at the Lady Moc Classic, and a third place finish at the Duck Invite...With her 23rd place finish at the Bruin Classic, 18th place finish at the Dixie Classic, and her tie for 17th place at the Peg Barnard Collegiate, Kostina now has six consecutive Top 25 finishes...Kostina is ranked 135th in the Golfweek/Sagarin individual performance index...Kostina comes to the Cougars after having been one of the most successful Russian golfers over the last few years...Kostina was recognized by Golf Digest Magazine as 'The Best Russian Golfer' in 1999 & 2001.
