Pac-10 Men's Tennis Roundup
April 24, 2003
OJAI - Calif. - Arizona State's Pim Van Mele advanced to the round of 16 in the Pac-10 Championships this morning, but fell in his bid to reach the Elite 8. Van Mele was the lone Sun Devil to advance to the Sweet 16.
Pim Van Mele pulled out a victory over UCLA's Erfan Djahangiri 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 Thursday afternoon in the opening round of 32 at the Pac-10 Championships. Chris Stewart was defeated by California's Conor Niland 6-1, 6-1 while Olivier Charroin fell to UCLA's Marcin Matkowski 6-3, 6-2. Oregon's Manual Kost defeated Chris Letcher 6-2, 6-4 to close out the opening round of singles for the Sun Devils. Charrion and Stewart will team up in the opening round of the doubles draw which will get underway Friday morning.
In the afternoon session, Van Mele lost a tough match to California's John Fruttero 7-6, 2-6, 6-2 who had the luxury of having a first round bye. After losing a hard fought first set in a tie breaker, Van Mele rallied to win the second set, but ran out of gas in the third. After pulling out a tough three setter earlier in the afternoon, Van Mele simply was exhausted, and didn't have enough left to pull this one out. Pim will return to action tomorrow afternoon when he teams with Ryan McBride in doubles competition.
In the Pac-10 Invitational, Arizona State's Ryan McBride fell in the opening round of 32 to Stanford's Joe Kao 6-0, 6-3.
