PALO ALTO, Calif.- Brian Anderson's solo home run in the top of the eighth inning lifted Arizona starter Richie Gardner and the Wildcats to a 4-3 win over No. 4 Stanford at Sunken Diamond in Palo Alto, Calif., on Friday. The victory improved the Wildcats to 29-15 for the season and one game back of Stanford (27-12, 9-4) for the Pac-10 lead at 8-5.
Anderson hit Cardinal starter John Hudgins' 0-2 pitch over the left field wall for his team-high-tying 11th home run of the season to snap a 3-3 tie.
Gardner and John Meloan then combined to close out the game in the bottom of the ninth, stranding the tying and go-ahead runs on first and second. The effort earned Gardner (7-1) his seventh win of the season and Meloan his second save.
Stanford jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third on Brian Hall's RBI single that scored Jonny Ash from second.
The Cardinal tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the inning on Ryan Garko's two-run single. UA's John Hardy made a nice play on the ground ball up the middle, but his throw pulled Pat Reilly off the base for an infield single, allowing both Carlos Quinten and Sam Fuld to score on the play and even the score at 3-3.
After three starts with no decisions, Gardner finally won his seventh game of the season with 8 1/3 innings of work. The right-hander struck out seven and walked four, while giving up just the three runs on seven hits.
Meloan closed out the win with two-thirds of an inning of work. The freshman got a pair of fly outs, including the game-ender to Dallas Haught in left, for Arizona's seventh save of the season.
Stanford's Hudgins fell to 7-3 for the year, despite tossing his fourth complete game. The Cardinal junior gave up all four runs on seven hits, with six strikeouts and two walks.
Stanford and Arizona will meet up again on Saturday for the second game of the three-game set. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. and all the action can be heard live on the radio on KNST (790-AM).
