Bruins Blast Golden Bears, 10-0, in Run Rule Win
April 25, 2003
LOS ANGELES - Home runs from Tairia Mims, Andrea Duran and Claire Sua powered the UCLA softball team to a 10-0 five-inning run rule victory over California on Friday afternoon. Keira Goerl pitched a two-hit shutout as the Bruins improve to 37-5 and 9-3 in the Pac-10. Cal falls to 38-13, 7-6 Pac-10.
UCLA's scoring started in the third inning, as the Bruins batted around. Toria Auelua drew a lead-off walk and was replaced by pinch-runner Amanda Simpson, before Simpson was erased on a fielders choice on Monique Mejia's at-bat. Andrea Duran followed with a single down the right field line, giving the Bruins runners on the corners with one out. Natasha Watley then earned the first RBI of the game on a ground-out with runners at the corners. The ball was hit by Watley, bounced off of Cal pitcher Kelly Anderson and shot straight up in the air before being fielded by Cal's shortstop, who was able to make the play at first base to erase Watley.
After Caitlin Benyi was hit by a pitch to put two runners on base, Cal made a pitching change, bringing Cassie Bobrow into the game to face Tairia Mims, who promptly hit a 3-0 pitch over the right field fence, giving UCLA a 4-0 lead. Claire Sua followed with a double up the middle, and scored when what looked to be a routine ground-out by Stephanie Ramos took a nasty hop on the infield dirt and turned into an RBI triple for Ramos, bringing the score to 5-0.
It was more of the same in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Mejia doubled to center field, and Andrea Duran hit her third homer of the season over the right field fence, bringing the score to 7-0. Watley then drew a walk and advanced to second on Benyi's at-bat before advancing to third on a bloop single to left field by Mims. Claire Sua then clubbed her 12th home run of the season just inside of the right field foul pole, giving UCLA a 10-0 lead going into the top of the fifth inning.
Goerl would sit the Golden Bears down in order to earn the complete game shutout victory, improving her season record to 27-5. Goerl allowed just two hits while striking out four.
The Bruins return to action on Saturday afternoon at 2 pm when they play host to Stanford at Easton Stadium.
