Kops-Jones Advances to Semifinals at Pac-10 Championships
April 25, 2003
Ojai, Calif. - Junior All-American #7 Raquel Kops-Jones advanced to the semifinals of the Pac-10 Championships for the second consecutive year with her victory over Stanford's Alice Barnes in the quarterfinal round this afternoon, April 25, in Ojai, Calif. The victory sets up semifinal matchup with #39 Maja Mlakar of Arizona at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, April 26. Kops-Jones and Mlakar tangled once before this year with the Cal junior claiming a 6-1, 6-1 decision March 7.
Kops-Jones and Mlakar are joined by #20 Daria Panova of Oregon and #6 Emilie Scribot of Arizona in the Final Four. In the singles invitational draw, both Nicole Havlicek and Jody Scheldt remained undefeated in tourney play, advancing to the semifinals as well.
Kops-Jones drew a first round date with ASU's Cindy Sureephong on Thursday, and stayed true to form with an easy 6-2, 6-1 decision to advance to the Round of 16. Her next opponent, Ester Bak of Oregon, was fresh off her own 6-4, 6-3 first round victory over UCLA's Shilpa Joshi. Kops-Jones proved her might once again, completing a 6-2, 6-3 victory to advance to the quarterfinals, setting up a confrontation with Stanford's #8 Alice Barnes. The two previously met in a thrilling match in the finals of the Northwest Regional Championships with the Cal ace topping the Cardinal freshman, 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-1, to take the crown. This afternoon, Kops-Jones didn't even have to break a sweat as Barnes withdrew due to injury, setting up the semifinal match between Kops-Jones and #39 Maja Mlakar of Arizona.
Scheldt and Havlicek, the two remaining Cal players still live in singles play, both advanced this afternoon. Havlicek recorded her fifth consecutive straight set victory with a 7-5, 6-1 decision over UCLA's Nina Yaftali to set up a confrontation with Stanford's Joanna Kao in the semis at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. Scheldt grabbed her fourth straight two-set victory - this time with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Arizona State's Joslynn Burkett. Scheldt will tangle with Washington's Colleen Gray at 11:00 a.m. in the semifinals on Saturday.
In the main draw of doubles competition, Cal's #4 Fusano and Kops-Jones are vying for their second consecutive doubles title after defeating UCLA's Megan Bradley and Lauren Fisher in last year's title match. The Bear duo got started on the right foot, ousting Washington State's Orsi Sallai and Anna Stepanchuk, 8-4, to advance to the quarterfinals. In the quarters, Kops-Jones and Fusano rolled to an 8-0 victory over Debbie Larocque and Kristy Randono of Arizona, setting up a semifinal matchup with Washington's Colleen Gray and Dea Sumantri.
Junior Kristen Case and true freshman Jessica Shu also made waves in the doubles competition, advancing to the invitational semis with their first victory of the year. After a first round bye, Case and Shu battled with Washington's Erin Boisclair and Erin Hoe to the bitter end, before the Husky pair bailed due to injury in a 6-3, 6-3 final. The Cal duo takes on USC's Bernadette Bayani and Melissa Esmero at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Through three rounds of action, the Bears' singles record vs. Pac-10 opponents is as follows: 1-0 vs. UCLA, 0-1 vs. USC, 2-0 vs. Stanford, 2-0 vs. Washington, 2-1 vs. Washington State, 2-0 vs. Oregon, 0-2 vs. Arizona and 3-0 vs. Arizona State. In doubles, Cal owns a 1-0 record vs. Washington State, 1-0 vs. Arizona and 1-0 vs. Washington.
Play will continue on Saturday with singles competition set to begin at 9:30 a.m., and doubles semifinal rounds at 3:30 p.m.
