Ojai, Calif. - UCLA's Marcin Matkowski dropped just two games in his quarterfinal singles match against Stanford's Scott Lipsky Friday, earning a spot in Saturday's semifinals at the Pac-10 Tennis Championships at Ojai's Libbey Park.
Matkowski, ranked No. 26 in the nation, defeated Lipsky, 6-2, 6-0. He will next face Cal's John Paul Fruttero, a 6-4, 6-1 winner over Washington's Matt Hanlin.
The bottom half of the draw saw a rematch of last year's Pac-10 final, in which UCLA's Rodrigo Grilli defeated Washington's Alex Vlaski. This year, however, Vlaski was the one who came out on top, defeating Grilli, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. Vlaski will play Stanford's David Martin the other semifinal. Martin downed Bruin sophomore Chris Lam, 7-5, 6-3.
UCLA is guaranteed a finalist in the Pac-10 Invitational draw, as both Alberto Francis and Chris Surapol advanced to the semifinals in the top half of the draw. Francis knocked off Cal's Balazs Veress, 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-4, while Surapol advanced after Cal's Steve Berke was forced to withdraw due to injury. Surapol and Francis will play each other on Saturday morning. Cal's Mik Ledvonova and Wayne Wong will face off in the other semifinal. Wong advanced following a 6-2, 2-6, 7-6(5) decision over Bruin senior Lassi Ketola.
In main draw doubles action, both UCLA teams suffered first-round defeats. Djahangiri/Francis fell to ASU's Oliver Charroin/Chris Stewart, 8-4. Grilli and Matkowski lost to ASU's Ryan McBride/Pim Van Mele, 8-5.
In the Pac-10 Invite doubles draw, Lam and Surapol defeated USC's Scott Patterson/Daniel Tontz, 8-1 in the first round. They advanced to Saturday's semifinals with an 8-4 victory over Oregon's Jason Menke/Aaron Spencer. Following a first-round bye, the Bruins' other doubles team of Ketola/Yovan advanced to the semifinals with an 8-5 victory over Washington's Scott Felsenthal/Nicolas Weiss.
