April 25, 2003
OJAI, Calif. - Oregon women's tennis sophomore Daria Panova, ranked No. 20 nationally, advanced to the semifinals Friday at the Pac-10 Championships in Ojai, Calif. Panova defeated No. 99 Erin Boisclair of Washington, 6-4, 6-3, in the quarterfinals and will play Saturday in the semis.
'She really stepped up and finished off her match,' Oregon coach Nils Schyllander said. 'Tomorrow will be a great opportunity for her and I think she's ready for it.'
Panova will get a strong test in the semifinals against Arizona's Emilie Scribot, the No. 6-ranked player in the nation. The two played earlier in a dual match in Arizona, with Scribot winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0.
In doubles action for the Ducks, Courtney Nagle and Panova, the No. 28-ranked doubles pair, lost in the first round of the championship draw to USC's Anita Loyola and Lovana Magnani, 8-4. Monika Gieczys and Jamie Marshall were also scheduled to play in the championship draw, but the pair pulled out with Gieczys being sick.
Ester Bak and Anna Leksinska teamed up in the invitational doubles bracket, and advanced to the second round by default. In round two, Bak and Leksinska knocked off Washington State's pair of Zsofi Fodor and Nora Gaal, 8-4, to make the semifinals.
Panova will play her semifinal match Saturday at 11 a.m., while Bak and Leksinska will play Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Freshman Julie Merle will play Washington State's Natalie Dow in singles in a backdraw at 11 a.m. Saturday.
