UCLA junior Cari Soong on Friday placed second in the women's hammer throw as the UCLA/USC dual meet got underway at West Los Angeles College. The remaining events in the Bruin/Trojan dual meet will be contested Saturday at Loker Stadium on the USC campus, starting at 11 a.m.

Soong, from Riverside North HS, placed second with a mark of 206-8 and scored three points for the Bruins. Her season-best of 208-9 (set April 12) is No. 3 on this week's Pac-10 chart and No. 5 on the national collegiate list.

The Trojans scored six points in the hammer event. USC senior Julianna Tudja, from Veszprem, Hungary, won the event (five points), with a dual meet record mark of 212-5 (breaking the old mark of 209-1 set by Soong last season). Last week at the Mt. SAC Relays, Tudja set the Pac-10 record in the hammer (218-5, breaking the old mark of 215-0, set by UCLA's Christina Tolson, 2001).

USC scored it's other point with a third-place finish by L'Orangerie Crawford, 203-6. Nonscorers included fourth-place, USC's Amy Thiel (186-7) and fifth-place, UCLA sophomore Jessica Cosby (181-8).

The Trojans enter Saturday's remaining dual meet events with a point total advantage of 6-3 (scoring for the meet is 5-3-1 for individual events and 5-0 for relays). UCLA, ranked No. 4 in the nation this week (the Trojans are ranked No. 5), leads the dual meet series 16-3 and the Bruins have won the last 10 meets in a row.
