Two UW Doubles Teams Advance To Pac-10 Championship Semifinals
April 25, 2003
OJAI, Calif. - A pair of Washington women's tennis doubles teams cruised through the first two rounds of competition and advanced to tomorrow's semifinals as the second day of the Pac-10 Tennis Championships was completed in Ojai, Calif., Friday.
UW's ninth-ranked pair of junior Claire Carter and senior Darija Klaic, as well as the team of sophomore Dea Sumantri and senior Colleen Gray will compete in each of the main draw doubles semifinals at 3:30 p.m., Saturday. Also advancing through to play tomorrow was Gray, who will compete in the invitational singles draw semifinal.
Carter and Klaic opened the day with an 8-4 victory over Mhairi Brown and Cindy Sureephong from Arizona State, before taking care of Lorena Arias and Chris Martinez from Washington in the quarterfinals, 8-5. The All-American tandem will face Maja Mlakar and Emilie Scribot from Arizona in the semifinal tomorrow.
Sumantri and Gray picked up an 8-5 win over Lauren Colalillo and Adria Engel from Arizona State in the first round, followed by an 8-6 victory over Anita Loyola and Lovana Magnani from USC in the quarters. They will have their hands full with the nation's fourth-ranked doubles team in the semifinals tomorrow, Christina Fusano and Raquel Kops-Jones from Cal.
Gray defeated Arizona's Kelly Perry in the invitational singles quarterfinal and will face Cal's Jody Scheldt in the semifinals Saturday at 11 a.m.
Senior Erin Boisclair was ousted from the singles main draw quarterfinal by Oregon's Daria Panova, who won the Pac-10 Indoor crown in Seattle in January. Boisclair and her doubles partner, junior Erin Hoe, received a bye in the first round of the invitational doubles bracket, but fell in the quarterfinals to Kristen Case and Jessica Shu from Cal.
Washington had two other teams playing in the doubles invitational draw. Senior Kathy Chi and freshman Stephanie Svanfeldt, and senior Andrea Coulter and freshman Dinka Hadzic each picked up wins in the first round but suffered second-round defeats. Senior Amy Allen paired with Oregon's Julie Merle as a doubles pair, but were ousted in the first round by Chi and Svanfeldt.
The Pac-10 Championships continue tomorrow with semifinals for both singles and doubles, before wrapping up Sunday with final matches.
