UA Track & Field Off and Running at Drake Relays

DES MOINES, Iowa - The University of Arizona's men's and women's track and field are picking up right where they left off with the success from last weekend. Both squads have turned out several outstanding performances at the 94th annual Drake Relays. Altogether, the Wildcats had 10 top-ten performances in Friday's action.

On the women's side, the 4x100 meter relay squad sped to a second-place finish in their heat in 45.80 seconds. The time was the fifth fastest on the day in the university division, and qualifies them for Saturday's final. The squad was made up of Sharifa Jones, Angel Perkins, Marquita Taylor and Seynabou Ndiaye. The 4x400 meter relay team, made up of Jones, Chelsea Powell, Taylor and Perkins, had the sixth-fastest time of the day. They finished second in their heat in 3:43.12, a new season's best.

In the 100m hurdles, Jones finished first in her heat, tying her season's best time of 13.56 seconds. She was the second-fastest qualifier for the final. Ndiaye earned a qualifying spot on the 100 meters after finishing second her heat in a time of 11.66 seconds, a new season's best. Teammate Marquita Taylor was fourth in the same heat, finishing in a new personal best of her own at 11.93 seconds. In the 400m hurdles, Powell broke the one-minute barrier, finishing fourth overall in 59.73 seconds.

Connie Jerz continued her success as a Wildcat with a second place finish in the pole vault, clearing a height of 13 feet, 5 � (4.11m). Teammate Juanita Braun was fourth overall, finishing at a height of 12-6 (3.81m), which improves her previous season's best.

In men's action, Jeff Hunter led the way for the Wildcats, finishing first in his heat of the 110-meter hurdles in 13.86 seconds, a new personal best. The time ties him for the fastest on the day.

The Wildcat men competed in three relays during Friday's events. In the 4x100 meter relay, the men finished fourth in their heat in 41.68 seconds, failing to qualify for the final. The squad was made up of Hunter, Jevon Mason, Matt Lea and Adrain Thomas. In the 4x400 meter relay, the squad qualified as the fifth fastest in a time of 3:08.39. The squad was comprised of Hunter, Lea, Thomas and Mason. In the 4x800 meter relay, the Wildcats were tenth overall in 7:37.55. The team was led off by Aaron Powell, followed by Matt Burton, Graeme Wells and Robert Cheseret.

The Wildcats will be back in action tomorrow at the Drake Relays with action getting underway at 8 a.m. CDT.
