Biles Sets OSU Career Doubles Record

April 26, 2003

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Chris Biles had a double in each game to set Oregon State's career record for two-base hits, but the Beavers were swept by Southern California 4-3 and 3-2 in 10 innings in Pacific-10 baseball Saturday at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. The senior outfielder now has 45 doubles, eclipsing the mark of 44 set by Joe Gerber from 1997-2000.

The Beavers (18-20 overall, 4-10 Pac-10) and Trojans (23-19, 8-6) wrap up their series Sunday at 1 p.m. The game can be heard on KEJO-AM (1240).

OSU rallied to tie Saturday's second game on Aaron Mathews' run-scoring single in the bottom of the eighth, then had the winning run at third base with one out in the ninth inning before losing. The two one-run losses put a damper on Biles' record-setting day.

'I was disappointed we didn't come away with a win,' Biles said. 'There were just a couple of situations where we didn't get it done. Our pitching was good enough to win, for sure.'

Ben Rowe pitched his second straight complete game in the opener, a six-hitter, but USC used a misjudged fly ball to score a pair of fourth-inning runs and those proved the difference. In the second game, Jake Postlwait pitched a career-high seven innings and allowed just one earned run but came away with no decision.

'We've played some really good teams well,' Biles said. 'We know we can play with teams like that, and that we can come back and win. USC is a good team, they're always in a regional, and we played them head-to-head today.'

Biles tied Gerber's record in the ninth inning of the opener. The Beavers had gotten back within 4-3 on Levi Webber's two-out solo homer in the eighth; with two out and none on in the ninth, Biles drove an opposite-field shot that hit about halfway up the leftfield fence to put the tying run in scoring position. USC secured the win, though, when Bret Butler got Seth Pietsch to fly out to deep right-centerfield.

The Beavers left seven runners on base in the game, five of those in scoring position. Jacoby Ellsbury was 2-for-3 and Chris Kunda was 2-for-3 with a double and a run batted in for OSU. Rowe walked four and struck out two for the Beavers.

Postlewait then threw seven strong innings in the second game, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and one walk while striking out three. He was on the hook for the loss, though, until Mathews' bloop single to right in the eighth inning scored Tony Calderon from second with the tying run; the Beavers also tried to score Biles from first on the play but he was thrown out at the plate.

In the top of the ninth, USC put runners at second and third with one out, but Andy Baldwin came in and pitched the Beavers out of the jam by striking out Billy Hart and getting Mike Moon to ground out. OSU then put the winning run at third base when, with one out, Chris Kunda singled up the middle and went to third on Butler's two-base throwing error on a pickoff play.

Rob Recuenco was intentionally walked, and Jordan Olson came on in relief and fanned Ellsbury for the second out. Seth Pietsch was then intentionally walked to load the bases, and pinch-hitter Levi Webber ended the inning by flying out to right on a two-ball, one-strike pitch.

Antony Lunetta led off the top of the 10th with a one-hop single through the right side; two walks and a hit batter issued by Baldwin plated him with one out. OSU did put the tying run on base when Mathews drew a two-out walk in the 10th, but Paul Richie grounded out to third to end the game.

Biles' record-setting double had come in the bottom of the fourth inning when he punched a ball to leftfield. It was the third time this week the Beavers had set or tied a school record for doubles; in winning at Portland 14-4 on Tuesday, OSU tied a school record with 10 doubles in a game and Richie had hit three of those to tie the individual mark for doubles in a game.

The second game was delayed twice by rain, for 27 minutes at the end of the first inning and for 11 minutes at the end of the sixth inning.
