Cougs Push ASU to 10 Innings In 5-3 Loss

PULLMAN, Wash. -- - Washington State scored two runs in the top of the ninth to send the game into extra innings, but allowed a walk-off home run by Jeremy West in the bottom of the 10th in a 5-3 loss to Arizona State in Pacific-10 Conference action at Packard Stadium Saturday night.
Garrett Alwert (1-3) pitched three innings, allowing three hits and two runs (none earned) in the losing effort for WSU (13-28 overall, 4-10 Pac-10). Starter Bryce Chamberlin went 6.2 innings, surrendering three runs and seven hits. Carlos Arguello (2-0) tossed 0.2 innings of relief, allowing no runs and no hits in notching the win for ASU (41-9, 9-5).
At the plate, the Cougars had five hits by five different players. Wes Falkenborg had two RBIs, while Bruce Jacobsen hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot to right field in the top of seventh inning. Justin Hart had his seven-game hitting streak snapped. Andre Ethier, Travis Buck and West led the Sun Devils with two hits each.
ASU took a 3-0 lead early, scoring a run in the bottom of the first inning and two in the third.
The Cougars responded with Jacobsen's solo blast in the seventh and tied the game with two runs in the ninth.
WSU had a chance to cut the ASU lead in the eighth. Jay Miller led-off the inning with a walk. Following Jeremy Farrar's strike-out, Grant Richardson walked. But Derek Bruce then hit into and inning-ending double play.
In the ninth, Steve Mortimer led-off the inning with a double to right field. Jonathan Fender followed with a walk. After Brandon Reddinger and Jacobsen were retired, Falkenborg doubled to left field, plating Mortimer and Fender.
The Cougars had an opportunity to take the lead in the 10th. Farrar led-off with a walk and following Zapper McGrath's ground-out, Bruce walked. But Arguello then entered the game and struck-out Mortimer and Fender to end the WSU threat.
In the ASU half of the inning, Alwert retired the first two batters, before allowing Jeff Larish to reach with a throwing error to first base. West followed with a home run to left center field, his fifth consecutive game with a homer against the Cougars.
The two teams conclude their series tomorrow at 1 p.m. WSU is expected to send Tony Banaszak to the mound.
