Mike Riley Comments from the Spring Game/Plus Final Statistics

April 26, 2003

Corvallis, Ore. - Comments from Head Coach Mike Riley following the spring game...

Q. Your overall thoughts on the scrimmage?

A. 'We had some fun today. It was a little lopsided for the white offense, and I didn't anticipate that. The rest of the scrimmage was good football -- I think the team learned a lot about how games go. We had some great opportunities, but we turned the ball over when we had some chances to score points - I was disappointed in that. There were a lot of things we need to tie down before fall, but there were also some very good things that happened today. We had some good passes; we ran the ball particularly well early in the scrimmage when Steven (Jackson) was playing. Overall, it was a good culmination to spring practice. I'm glad we got through spring practice without any major injuries. I think we established some things in this program that the coaching staff likes as we enter fall.'

Q. It appeared Trent Bray had a very good scrimmage. Do you envision him being on the field a lot this fall?

A. 'We will get productive players on the field. The very first week of practice I told Coach Charlie Camp that Trent Bray makes a lot of plays. He won't have to worry about playing time this season. Guys who make plays get into games. Harvey Whiten also made a lot of nice plays today. I'll have to watch the tape and take a look at everybody, but Trent and Harvey made a lot of plays.'

Q. Do the turnovers on offense concern you?

A. 'They do. They are concerning as far as we can't make those mistakes and expect to win games. Turnovers are a fairly obvious thing that we need to look at and eliminate. If we can couple the elimination of the turnovers with some of the execution I saw today, we have a chance to be a potent offense. But, we certainly can't turn the ball over and win.'

Q. How do you feel about the performance of Derek Anderson?

A. 'I thought he made some really nice throws. He did miss a couple of throws, and we missed a protection one time that cost him an interception. Overall, I was pleased with him. We tried to hit a little bit of everything, it wasn't like we game-planned this scrimmage and had a rhythm of things. I was just throwing in a number of different things out there today. For the most part I thought Derek executed and understood what we were trying to do. I think the bigger concern is who comes out of spring as the number two quarterback, I'm not very clear about that right now.'

Q. After James Newson, what are your thoughts on the receiving corps?

A. 'James Newson is a very productive player and it showed again today. We saw Jayson Boyd and Kenny Farley make a couple of good plays, but that is how this spring has been. I don't think anybody separated themselves today from the rest of the pack, but I do think if those guys keep working and have a good summer and fall camp that we will have depth at receiver. I don't know who will separate themselves and be the frontline players, other than James.'

Q. How has the backup role at tailback developed?

A. 'I think there are two pretty clear guys as backups in Dwight (Wright) and Ryan (Cole). Josh Farrell is a pretty good football player also. The staff is going to let that play out throughout fall camp, I'm not ready to name a number two guy as of yet.'
