No. 5 Cal Captures Pac-10 Crown Behind Laing's Individual Title
April 26, 2003
CORVALLIS, Ore. - With senior Vikki Laing leading the way, No. 5 California shot a 301 Saturday to claim its first Pac-10 Championship by five strokes at the Trysting Tree Golf Course. The Golden Bears finished the 54-hole tournament with an 892 to hold off sixth-ranked and three-time defending conference champion Arizona (897) and No. 10 UCLA (902).
Laing captured the Bears' first individual title by shooting an even-par 216.
Cal, which led the tournament after all three rounds, held as much as a seven-stroke lead Saturday. Arizona whittled the lead to two strokes midway through the round, but the Wildcats came up short in their bid to become the first team to win seven Pac-10 titles. The Wildcats and Bears each shot the low team score of the day.
The Pac-10 crown is the Bears' nation's-best sixth tournament title of the 2002-03 season and fourth straight victory at the Trysting Tree Golf Course. Cal has also won the last three Oregon State Invitationals on the same course.
Laing battled USC's Mikaela Parmlid down to the final hole before finishing on top by one shot. Playing in the final group, Laing and Parmlid began the day tied for second at one-under and moved into the lead when second-round leader Blair O'Neal of Arizona State slid down the leader board, where she would finish fourth. Arizona's Erica Blasberg, the highest-ranked player at the tournament at No. 2, was third at 219.
A birdie on the 13th hole gave Laing a short-lived lead, until Parmlid caught her with a birdie on 14. Parmlid then bogeyed 15 to fall one shot back. Laing fell back into a tie with a bogie on 16, but another bogie by Parmlid on 18 opened the door for Laing to win her second collegiate tournament with her par on the final hole.
The NCAA regional selections will be announced on Monday.
