Panova Advances to Finals of Pac-10 Championships
April 26, 2003
OJAI, Calif. - Oregon women's tennis sophomore Daria Panova will have the chance Sunday to win her second Pac-10 title of the year. Panova, ranked No. 20 nationally, defeated No. 6 Emilie Scribot of Arizona, 7-6, 6-1, in the semifinals Saturday at the Pac-10 Championships in Ojai, Calif.
'She played a great match, just a high level throughout the match,' Oregon coach Nils Schyllander said. 'She played a flawless tiebreaker to finish off the first set and that really broke her opponent.'
Panova faced a set point in the first set, down 5-4, but fought back to tie the set, 6-6. In the tiebreaker, Panova hit seven consecutive winners to claim the first set and never looked back. Panova's victory is even more impressive considering she lost to Scribot earlier this season, 6-2, 6-0.
'This is really exciting for her to be in the finals of the Pac-10 Championships again,' Schyllander said.
In January, Panova won the Pac-10 Indoor Championships played in Seattle, Wash. Panova will play in the finals against No. 7 Raquel Kops-Jones of California Sunday at 9:30 a.m. Panova defeated Kops-Jones, 6-4, 6-1, in a dual match earlier this season.
Junior Courtney Nagle and Panova, the No. 28-ranked pair in the country, defeated Arizona State's Adria Engel and Lauren Colalillo, 8-0, in a consolation doubles match. Also in doubles play, Ester Bak and Anna Leksinska lost in the semifinals of the invitational draw, 8-2.
Freshman Julie Merle was Oregon's only participant in the singles back draw, winning her match against Washington State's Natalie Dow, 6-0, 6-0.
