Trojans Double Pleasure At Oregon State

April 26, 2003

CORVALLIS, Ore. - A full-count, bases-loaded walk to senior Travis McAndrews in the top of the 10th proved to be the game-winner Saturday and the USC Trojans completed a Pac-10 doubleheader sweep against the host Oregon State Beavers with a 3-2 win. The Trojans won the first game of the day-night doubleheader by a 4-3 score.

USC improves to 23-19 on the season as the Trojans are now tied for third in the Pac-10 with Arizona with an 8-6 record. The Trojans are two games behind first-place Stanford, which rallied for a 10-9 win at home today against Arizona and one game behind Arizona State, which defeated Washington State at home tonight with a 5-3 win in 10 innings. Oregon State fell to 18-21 overall and 4-10 in conference play.

After being three games below .500, the Trojans have won 10 of their last 14 games.

In the first game, freshman Bobby Paschal earned his third win of the season by going 6 1/3 innings, allowing only two runs on six hits with a walk and eight strikeouts. Bret Butler threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings to earn his fifth save of the season.

OSU's Chris Kunda hit an RBI double in the second for a 1-0 lead, but the Trojans answered in the third when Billy Hart hit his first collegiate homer with a solo shot to left. Spencer Gordon hit an RBI triple to center and third baseman Darin Vieira hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth for a 3-1 USC lead. Vieira added an RBI single in the sixth, but the Beavers added a run in the seventh and eighth innings. Pinch-hitter Chris Biles hit a two-double to left for Oregon State, but Butler got Seth Pietsch to fly out to right to end the game.

In the nightcap, a similar sequence took place as the Beavers scored a run in the second on an RBI single by second baseman Rob Recuenco. The Trojans tied the game in the third when Hart scored on an RBI single by Anthony Lunetta. Hart reached base on a single and advanced to third when on a pickoff attempt, OSU first baseman Andy Jarvis hit Hart in the back on a throw to second.

The Trojans took the 2-1 lead in the fifth on an RBI triple by Michael Moon to right. Oregon State tied the game, however, with a run in the bottom of the eight. With runners at first and second, Aaron Mathews hit a soft fly ball to shallow right that dropped in front of Hart to score Tony Calderon, but a strong throw by Moon to the plate got Biles on freshman catcher Jeff Clement's tag to end the inning.

In the bottom of the ninth, Bret Butler threw an errant pickoff attempt at first to advance the winning run for Oregon State to third. After an intentional walk to Recuenco, the Trojans brought in reliever Jordan Olson. Olson struck out Jacoby Ellsbury and intentionally walked Pietsch to load the bases. Olson then got pinch hitter Levi Webber to fly out to right to push the game into extra innings.

Lunetta led off the 10th with a single to right on a 2-2 pitch by Andy Baldwin and advanced to second on a walk to Clement. With one out, Spencer Gordon was hit by a pitch to load the bases for McAndrews, who walked for the go-ahead run. With two outs in the bottom of the 10th and a runner at first, Olson got catcher Paul Richie to ground out to third for the sweep.

Olson improved to 2-0 on the season while Baldwin (3-1) suffered his first loss. USC's Anthony Reyes allowed only one run on six hits in 6 innings, his longest stint of the season. Reyes allowed just one walk and struck out six batters in the no-decision.

With a double in the second game, Biles set an Oregon State record with his 45th career double.

The series will conclude tomorrow at 1 p.m. with the broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
