UA Track & Field Finishes Two-Meet Weekend in Good Form

DES MOINES, Iowa - The University of Arizona's men's and women's track and field teams completed the weekend with several impressive performances at both the 94th annual Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa and at the UCSD Triton Invitational in San Diego, Calif. The Wildcats earned 11 top-ten finishes in Saturday's action at the Drake Relays, while the Arizona throwers come home with some great marks from San Diego.

The UA women finished very well in Saturday's action at the Drake Relays. Sharifa Jones led the way for the Wildcats with a second place finish in the 100-meter hurdles, crossing the line in 13.72 seconds. Seynabou Ndiaye brought home a fifth place finish in the 100 meters. She finished in 11.91 seconds. Marquita Taylor ran in the 200 meters, finishing fifth in 24.91 seconds. In the 1,500 meters, Beth Hoge was fourth overall in 4:25.27. Amy Linnen returned to the Wildcat lineup after battling a foot injury for a majority of the outdoor season. In the pole vault, Linnen finished eighth, clearing a height of 12-10 � (3.92m). This meet is the first competition Linnen has seen since the NCAA Indoor Championships in March.

In men's Drake Relays action, Jeff Hunter was one of the team leaders with his second place finish in the 110-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 14.00 seconds. Jevon Mason sprinted to a sixth place finish in the 400 meters in 46.44 seconds. The 4x400 meter relay squad finished seventh in 3:09.73. The squad was made up of Hunter, Matt Lea, Adrain Thomas and Mason. In the 800 meters, Aaron Powell finished ninth in 1:52.58. Jin Daikoku ran to a ninth place finish in the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:52.16. The distance medley relay team was fifth in 9:52.36. The team was comprised of Josh Ludwig, Daniel Olea, Graeme Wells and Robert Cheseret.

At the UCSD Triton Invitational, the UA women performed very well. In the hammer, Amber Varner improved her qualifying mark to 175-5 (53.47m), finishing eighth overall. She was also eighth in the shot put with a throw of 47-6 � (14.49m). In the invitational discus, Rachel Varner was ninth with a throw of 165-8 (50.51m). In the open discus, Amber Varner was second, finishing with a mark of 164-2 (50.03m). Julie DeMarni was fifth overall in the javelin.

For the UA men's throwers, Ryan Moore finished fifth in the hammer with a mark of 197-4 (60.14m). Teammate Richard Legarra was sixth with a throw of 196-5 (59.86m). Sean Shields finished third in the shot put with a throw of 61-4 � (18.70m). Richard Legarra took over the best discus mark by an Arizona thrower with a toss of 188-11 (57.58m).

The Wildcats will travel to Tempe, Ariz. next weekend for the annual outdoor double-dual meet with Arizona State and Northern Arizona on Saturday, May 3.
