Adam Jenkins Becomes Sixth Current Duck to Win Pac-10 Track & Field Athlete of Week
April 28, 2003
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The University of Oregon men's and women's track and field teams received their second Pacific-10 Conference Athlete of the Week honor in 2003 as junior Adam Jenkins was named the Men's Field Event Athlete of the Week Monday.
The Gladstone, Ore., native leap-frogged teammate John Stiegeler to the top of the Pac-10 javelin rankings, thanks to his three-foot personal best and second-place mark (221-4) in last Saturday's Oregon Invitational twilight session. Stiegeler still ranks second in the conference and top 25 nationally with his season best of 220-0.
The two-time Pac-10 finalist Jenkins now ranks eighth all-time for the Ducks in an event that has featured 22 All-Americans and seven NCAA champions. At the national level, Jenkins ranked 28th on last week's collegiate list and will likely climb into the top-25 this week - and potentially as high as 21st with Saturday's six-foot, seven-inch season best. His previous season best came in April's Pepsi Team Invitational (second, 214-9), and his former personal best came in his collegiate opener, the Oregon Preview in 2001 (second, 218-5).
Jenkins is the second Duck honored this season in the men's field event category in only the third edition of the weekly honor. Redshirt senior Adam Kriz claimed his first conference honor two weeks prior in the inaugural honor for his then personal best a six-foot, 10-inch improvement - in the Pepsi Team Invitational (first, 217-10). Kriz has upped his personal best in two other meets outdoors this year, and currently stands fifth all-time on the Oregon all-time charts with his current best (219-9) from the Oregon Invitational last Saturday.
Besides Jenkins and Kriz, four other current Ducks have combined for eight Pac-10 honors the past three seasons - current seniors Santiago Lorenzo (Pac-10 Champs Decathlon 5/01, first, 7,617; Texas Relays 4/01, decathlon, first, 7,726; 2000 Texas Relays 4/00, decathlon third, 7,580) and John Stiegeler (Texas Relays 4/02, javelin, first, 242-11; Texas Relays 4/01, javelin, second, 245-9; Oregon Invite 4/01, javelin, second, 241-11), and juniors Trevor Woods (Pepsi Team Invite 4/02, pole vault, first, 18-0 1/2) and Sarah Malone (Oregon Twilight 5/01, javelin, first, 174-0).
Joining Jenkins on this week's conference honoree list were sprinter Wes Felix of USC, sprinter Sheena Johnson of UCLA, and long jumper Erin Williams of USC.
