Bruins Fall to Top-Ranked Cal State Fullerton, 11-1:
The Bruins returned home on Tuesday after a seven-game road swing to fall, 11-1 to top-ranked Cal State Fullerton. Senior Warren Trott drove in the only Bruin run with the first home run of his career. Trott, along with Billy Susdorf led UCLA with two hits each. Starter Bryan Beck (1-2) took the loss after allowing three runs on four hits in two innings of work.
Billy Susdorf Named MetRx/UCLABruins.com Athlete of the Week:
Susdorf was named the MetRx/UCLABruins.com Athlete of the Week on April 21st after leading UCLA to its first series victory over fourth-ranked Arizona State since 1999, guiding the Bruins to a 9-8 win on Thursday and an 8-7 extra-innings win on Friday. He hit .375 (6-for-16) over four games this past week and led the team with 11 total bases and a .688 slugging percentage. He had two doubles and a home run.
In Friday night's 13-inning victory over the Sun Devils, Susdorf drove in all three extra-inning runs with a solo home run in the 11th frame and a two-RBI double in the top of the 13th.
The honor was the first of Susdorf's career and the first given to a baseball player this season.
UCLA Takes First Series Win over #4 Arizona State Since 1999:
The Bruins posted one-run wins on Thursday and Friday before losing on Saturday to take their first series win over the Sun Devils since 1999.
Trailing 4-0 after the first inning, the Bruins rallied to defeat ASU, 9-8 in the first game. Chris Jensen and Brandon Averill hit back-to-back doubles in the top of the ninth inning before Jensen score the winning run on a wild pitch. Home runs from Wes Whisler and Ryan McCarthy drove in five UCLA runs.
In Friday night's 13-inning marathon, Billy Susdorf drove in all three extra-inning runs, on a solo homer and two-RBI double, to lead UCLA to a 8-7 victory. Susdorf and Brett McMillan led the Bruins with three hits apiece.
Saturday saw the Sun Devils jump out to a 9-0 lead which the Bruins could not overcome, falling 17-1. Preston Griffin's team-leading eighth home run of the season was UCLA's only run. McMillan extended his hitting streak to nine games, which is the longest on the team this season.
About Loyola Marymount...
The Lions enter the week 22-23, 9-12 in WCC action. They are currently on a six-game losing streak after being swept by Santa Clara last weekend. Loyola Marymount has lost 11 of its last 12 contests, posting a 7-5 victory over Gonzaga on April 17th.
Head Coach Frank Cruz is in his seventh year as the head coach of the Lions, with a 171-180-1 mark heading into the season. In their only other meeting this season, the Bruins fell to LMU, 9-0 at George Page Stadium.
