April 29, 2003

Glendale, CA - The 20th-ranked Washington men's golf team is in fourth place after the third round of the Pac-10 Championships at Oakmont Country Club in Glendale, Calif. The Huskies shot 377 during Tuesday's third round to fall 33 strokes behind first place UCLA. The Bruins upped their lead to 23 strokes over second-place California by posting a 5-under score of 355 during the third round.

UCLA's three-day total is 1,081 followed by California at 1,104. Arizona shot 376 during the third round to move past the Huskies into third place at 1,109. Washington is fourth at 1,114 while Arizona State is fifth at 1,119. The Bruins are attempting to win their first Pac-10 title since 1985.

The Pac-10 tournament features six-man lineups with the five best scores counting toward the team total.

Washington junior All-American Brock Mackenzie is tied for seventh after shooting 3-over 75 during the third round. Mackenzie's 54-hole total is 2-over 218. He started his round with an eagle on the par-5 first hole but could not build any momentum, carding five bogies between the fifth and 14th holes. Mackenzie trails co-leaders John Merrick of UCLA and Jim Seki of Stanford by five strokes. Merrick shot 69 to move into a tie for the lead while Seki, the defending Pac-10 champion, posted an even-par 72.

Washington's best score of the day was by Dan Potter, who shot even par 72 to move into ninth place at 3-over 219. Conner Robbins and John Robertson are tied for 28th at 227. Derek Berg is 31st at 228 while Corey Prugh is 54th at 237.

The final round of the Pac-10 Championships will take place Wednesday. The winner of the tournament will receive an automatic berth in the NCAA Regional Championships.
