Rowing Faces Rival Bruins In Dual Race On Saturday
April 29, 2003
The USC women's rowing team heads to Ballona Creek in Marina del Rey to face UCLA in the second-annual dual race between the two schools this Saturday, May 3. The teams will race a Varsity Eight, JV Eight, Varsity Four and Novice Eight boat, with the overall winner earning all five points for the Lexus Gauntlet. The first race begins at 9 a.m.
The USC Varsity Eight crew is ranked No. 7 in the latest USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association NCAA Division I Varsity Eight Coaches Poll released on April 23. The Women of Troy are ranked behind Cal, Washington, Harvard, Stanford, Princeton and Michigan.
Battle for the Lexus Gauntlet
Saturday's race will decide who will capture all five points awarded in women's rowing for the 2002-03 Lexus Gauntlet -- a season-long competition between USC and UCLA. This unique program awards points for the winner of each Bruin-Trojan head-to-head athletic contest throughout the year. After a 17.5-point comeback effort last Saturday, UCLA has tied this year's competition at 50 points apiece with two events remaining - men's golf and rowing.
USC and UCLA will race four boats - a Varsity Eight, JV Eight, Varsity Four and Novice Eight. The dual race winner will be determined by a point system similar to the one used at the Pac-10 Championships. With only two boats in each race, three points will be awarded to the Varsity Eight winner, two to the JV Eight and one apiece to the winners of the Varsity Fours and Novice Eights.
Last Time Out
USC was edged by Stanford in three of four races in a dual race at the USC Boathouse on April 27. The Varsity Four came away the lone winner, beating Stanford by five seconds. The seventh-ranked Varsity Eight held the lead for the first 1000 meters before the fourth-ranked Cardinal pulled away in the last 500. The USC JV Eight was unable to overcome an early lead by Stanford, finishing six seconds behind the Cardinal. The novice team was unable to repeat their win over Stanford at the San Diego Crew classic, as they lost their lead when they caught two crabs.
