Cal Men to Host NCAA Regional; Women Travel to Texas A&M

The University of California men's (18-4, 4-2) and women's (19-5, 6-2) tennis teams were both selected to participate in the 2002 NCAA Division I Tennis Championships, announced by the NCAA Division I Subcommittee this afternoon, April 30 in Indianapolis. Both the men and women received the No. 4 seeds in their respective 64-team draws.
The selection of the teams for the championships is based on won-lost record, strength of schedule, and eligibility and availability of student-athletes.
The seventh-ranked California men were also slated to host the regional bracket at Hellman Tennis Complex Saturday and Sunday, May 10-11. The Bears will challenge the winner of the Big Sky Conference, Sacramento State (12-15), in the first round, while Arizona (9-10) and Boise State (17-7) will tangle with each other in the other first round match. The victor of the four-team regional competition will travel to the NCAA Team Championships, May 17-26 at the University of Georgia in Athens. This is the men's fourth consecutive postseason appearance.
The #4 women, who are making their 22nd consecutive NCAA appearance, will travel to College Station, Texas to take part in their four-team regional. Cal will tackle Army (17-6) in first round action for a chance to play the winner between LSU (12-12) and Texas A&M (19-10) in the Round of 32. The winner of the regional will advance to the NCAA Championships, May 15-24 at the University of Florida in Gainesville.
