Huskies Finish Fifth at Pac-10 Golf Tourney

Glendale, CA - The 20th-ranked Washington men's golf team finished fifth at the Pac-10 Championships held at the Oakmont Country Club in Glendale, Calif. The Huskies carded a final round total of 370, their second best 18-hole score during the event, to finish at 1,484. UCLA won its first Pac-10 title since 1985 by shooting 358 during the final round for a 72-hole total of 1439. The Bruins bettered second-place Arizona by 27 strokes. UCLA lead after each round during the event.

The Pac-10 tournament featured six-man lineups with the five best scores counting toward the team total.

UCLA's John Merrick ran away from the field during the final round to claim medalist honors. He shot 9-under 63 on Thursday for a 72-hole total of 12-under 276. Stanford's Jim Seki, the defending champion, was second at 286. Arizona State's Brady Stockton also shot 286.

Washington junior All-American Brock Mackenzie finished the tournament tied for eighth after shooting even-par 72 during the final round. Mackenzie finished the event at 2-over 290. It marked the 22nd time during Mackenzie's career he has finished in the top-10 at a tournament and the third consecutive season he has achieved a top-10 finish at the Pac-10s.

Washington's Dan Potter had a disappointing 80 during the final round to finish 21st overall at 11-over 299. Conner Robbins and John Robertson both shot 73 on Wednesday to tie for 23rd at 300. Derek Berg was 39th at 305 and Corey Prugh shot 75 to finish 51st at 312.

By winning the Pac-10 Championship, UCLA receives the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals. Washington will be the host for the West Regional May 15-17 at Washington National Golf Club in Auburn.
