Men's Golf Finishes in Tenth Place at Pac-10 Championships
April 30, 2003
GLENDALE, Calif. - Washington State men's golf finished in tenth place at the Pacific-10 Championships at Oakmont Country Club at Glendale, Calif., Wednesday.
The Cougars were led by a pair of Ryan's who finished knotted at 32nd. Ryan Camp, who averaged just under a 76 for the tournament, recorded a birdie on both the front nine and back nine to finish the round at 3-over, and Ryan Ressa used two early birdies on the back nine for a total of 1-over for the round. Isaac Woods improved his score by four shots over the previous round and finished at a tie for 37th, followed by Dustin White at a tie for 42nd, Ben Bryson at a tie for 48th, and Chad Carlson at 57th.
As a team, the Cougars entered the day just two shots back of eighth place California, and used 14 birdies in today's round to try and move up the leader board, but fell just short and finished in tenth. The Cougars can look to the successes brought into the tournament though, as they captured one team title, and finished in the Top 7 in three of the six tournaments this spring.
John Merrick of UCLA torched the course for a final round score of 63, a tournament low for any player, and won the individual title by 10 strokes. Merrick led a UCLA squad that dominated the field, entering the day with a 23 stroke lead over second place, and finally capturing the title by 27 strokes over Arizona.
The Cougars fate now lies in the hands of the postseason selection committee to make the announcement of who will be competing at the NCAA West Regional hosted by the University of Washington.
