April 30, 2003
Los Angeles, Calif. -- The USC men's and women's tennis teams were each selected to compete at the 2003 NCAA Division I Tennis Championships, the NCAA announced today. The men's team will travel to UCLA, for the first and second rounds, while the women will host a four-team regional at Marks Tennis Stadium.
The fifth-ranked Women of Troy, also seeded fifth in the tournament field, face Sacramento State (16-7) in the first round on Friday, May 9, and Cal Poly (20-6) and Georgia Tech (13-6) will square off in the other match. The winners of each match will face each other on Saturday, May 10, in the second round, with the winner advancing to the NCAA Round of 16 to be held in Gainesville, Fla. USC finished the regular season with a 19-5 overall record and 5-3 mark in the Pac-10 (fourth place).
The No. 21-ranked USC men will face UC Santa Barbara (15-8) on May 10 in first-round action at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. If USC wins, it will face either fifth-seeded UCLA (20-3) or Wichita State (16-10) in the second round on May 11, with the winner moving to the NCAA Round of 16 in Athens, Ga. The defending NCAA champion Trojans posted a 13-11 record in regular season play and a 2-5 mark in the Pac-10 (tied for sixth place).
Between the two programs, USC owns 23 national team titles and 39 singles and doubles individual championships. This marks the 27th consecutive year the men have received an NCAA postseason bid, and the 12th-straight for the women.
