Women's Tennis Set To Host NCAA First And Second Rounds May 10-11
April 30, 2003
SEATTLE, Wash. - Washington's sixth-ranked women's tennis team earned its seventh-straight postseason berth and as a No. 6 seed has been selected to host the first and second rounds of the NCAA Championships, May 10-11, the NCAA announced Wednesday.
In addition to the Huskies (17-3), rounding out the four-team field playing at Bill Quillian Stadium on the UW campus will be Southern University (13-12), Illinois (16-7) and UNLV (16-5). First-round matches will be played on Saturday, May 10, with Illinois and UNLV set to face each other at 10 a.m., followed by Washington's contest with Southern at 2 p.m. Winners of the first-round matches play on Sunday, May 11, at 1 p.m., for the right to advance to the 16-team NCAA finals in Gainesville, Fla., May 15-18.
The Huskies finished the regular season 17-3 and tied for second in the Pac-10 with a 6-2 conference mark. Washington has been ranked sixth in the nation for the last three weeks, its highest national ranking ever in the program's history. Also ranked in the latest Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis poll are Illinois at No. 25 and UNLV at No. 30. Saturday's meeting will be the first ever between Washington and Southern, while the Huskies are 4-2 against UNLV and 1-0 against Illinois all-time.
Washington is making its seventh-straight trip to the NCAA Championships, and the sixth under head coach Patty McCain. Last year, the Huskies earned a 4-0 first-round win over Loyola Marymount before falling in the regional final to UCLA, 4-1, in Los Angeles.
This year marks the second time in the last three years the Huskies have hosted an NCAA regional, the last time being 2001. After winning the regional with victories over Army (4-0) and Illinois (4-0) that season, the Huskies went on the advance to the NCAA quarterfinals, the highest NCAA team finish in school history.
The NCAA women's singles and doubles championships will follow the team championships in Gainesville, May 19-24. Those individual selections will be announced Thursday, May 1.
