Softball Splits Double-Header With Portland State
May 1, 2003
PORTLAND, Ore. - Oregon State's softball squad split a pair of games against Portland State University in Thursday's non-conference double-header at Erv Lind Stadium. The Beavers were victorious in game-one by a score of 9-1, before dropping game-two, 3-1.
The Beavers (30-25) garnered their fifth consecutive 30-plus win season while the Vikings improved to 18-28 on the year.
Game-one wasn't pretty at first, but it worked. Lisa Allen's fourth inning home run to left field gave Oregon State a 1-0 lead and Beaver hurler Monica Hoffman (21-14) held the Vikings to just three hits over 5.1 innings of work.
OSU struggled to get on the scoreboard, stranding nine runners through the first five innings, despite tallying six hits and drawing four walks against PSU starter Morgan Seibert (11-11).
The Beavers extended their lead to 6-0 however, in the sixth inning behind five hits and a walk. Allen led-off the frame with a double to left field, her third hit of the contest, and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Brynnen Guthrie's sacrifice fly to center field plated Cara Maxey and Kelly Petersen followed with an RBI single to center field. Vanessa Iapala then tallied an RBI double to center, giving OSU the extra cushion.
PSU broke-up the shutout in the bottom of the sixth when Annie Peccia's single to center field off Beaver reliever Amy Klever scored Tiffany McHenry.
Oregon State pushed the lead to 9-1 behind five hits in the seventh inning, including a two-run double to left field by Shelly Prochaska.
Freshman Adrienne Alo finished a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate with two walks and two runs scored while Allen and Burnum each went 3-for-4.
Portland State jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in game-two behind a two-out 3-run home run to left field by Nicole Ivie in the opening inning. Klever entered the game moments later to replace Hoffman and shut down the Vikings to end the frame.
Back-to-back singles by Allen and Shannon Sorg to lead off the third inning helped the Beavers get one run back. After Burnum reached on a fielder's choice, Guthrie's groundout plated Allen, to make the score 3-1.
That was all the Beavers would get however, as Viking hurler Michelle Hext kept the Oregon State batters guessing for the entire contest, allowing just three hits while striking out five batters.
Oregon State returns to Pacific-10 Conference action when the Beavers face No. 5 University of Washington in Seattle on Friday. First-pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
