May 3, 2003
TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State track and field team closed out its home portion of the 2003 outdoor season with a clean sweep of the annual Double Dual Saturday at Sun Angel Stadium. The men defeated Arizona, 101-92, and Northern Arizona, 107-67, to win the Double Dual for the second time this year after taking the indoor meet in Flagstaff earlier this year. The women also swept both intrastate rivals by handing the Wildcats a 91-87 decision and the Lumberjacks a 104-47 loss.
Lisa Aguilera shined for the Sun Devils as she won the 3,000m steeplechase in a Pac-10, school and Sun Angel Stadium record 9:51.65. The record was formerly held by Kelly MacDonald at 9:55.49 making this the second record of MacDonald's that Aguilera has rewritten in 2003. Aguilera's time also is the fastest in the nation this year and the only time to break 10 minutes.
Also marking their names in the record book was Cassandra Reed in the 400m dash with the No. 6 time of 52.53, Travis Jones at No. 4 in the hammer with a toss of 58.83; and women's hammer throwers No.2 Sandra Orsund (55.15m), No. 3 Jenae Sonne (51.26m) and No. 6 Molly Clarke (42.13m).
In all, the men and women each won eight of the contested events with Casey Clark (javelin and high jump), Desiree Davila (800m and 1,500m runs) and Orsund (hammer and discus) winning two events a piece. On the men's side, 11 marks/times qualified Sun Devils for the Pac-10 Championships while nine gained entrance into the NCAA west region event while the women had 17 and 19, respectively.
Next up for the Sun Devils is a week off before traveling to Los Angeles, Calif., and USC for the 2003 Pac-10 Championships, May 17-18.
