Baseball Beavers Lose Twice At UCLA

May 3, 2003

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Jacoby Ellsbury homered in his second and third straight games Saturday but Oregon State lost twice to UCLA in Pacific-10 baseball, falling 8-7 in the completion of Friday's suspended game and 10-9 in 10 innings. The Beavers (18-24 overall, 4-13 Pac-10) built five-run leads in both games but couldn't hang on for a victory.

The Beavers and Bruins (22-25, 7-7) complete their series Sunday at 12 noon. The game can be heard on KEJO-AM (1240).

Oregon State had taken a 4-0 lead Friday night in the first game of the series before it was suspended due to rain in the bottom of the fourth inning. Junior righthander Ben Rowe, who had allowed just one hit in 3 2/3 shutout innings on Friday, returned to the mound Saturday and finished the fourth inning.

OSU made it 5-0 in the top of the fifth on Seth Pietsch's second double of the game and Aaron Mathews' run-scoring single. In the bottom of the inning, though, the Bruins got to Rowe for four runs; UCLA added two more off reliever Kenny Anderson for a 6-5 lead before the side was retired.

Ellsbury got OSU even in the top of the sixth, though, with a one-out drive that sailed well into the parking lot beyond the rightfield fence. The game remained tied until the top of the eighth, when Ty Kline surrendered a one-out double and Ryan McCarthy followed with a two-run homer to left for an 8-6 UCLA lead.

The Beavers battled back in the ninth, as Chris Kunda hit his third homer of the season to make it a one-run game. With one out, Andy Jarvis singled through the right side and Chris Biles reached on an error to move the tying run into scoring position; UCLA reliever Doug Silva got Pietsch to fly out and Mathews to pop out to end the game.

Ellsbury was 3-for-5 while both Kunda and Pietsch were 2-for-4 for the Beavers, who outhit the Bruins 12-9 but left nine runners on base. Senior lefthander Noel Clark kept the Beavers even in the late innings by not allowing a run in a career-high 1 2/3 innings.

In the second game of the series, Oregon State used a four-run fifth inning and a strong start from junior lefthander Jake Postlewait to build a 6-1 lead in the middle of the seventh inning. Ellsbury had gotten the Beavers started by leading off the game with a homer to right-center, his fourth of the season.

OSU tacked on four more runs against Bruin lefty Wes Whisler in the top of the fifth, getting a two-run double by Tony Calderon, a run-scoring double by Andy Jarvis and a run-scoring single by Levi Webber. After the Bruins picked up a run in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Beavers returned the lead to five runs on Chris Biles' pinch-hit RBI single up the middle in the top of the seventh.

Postlewait worked into the seventh inning, allowing just the one run on nine hits and one walk while striking out three. He left the game after giving up back-to-back hits to start the seveth, but freshman righthander Andy Baldwin retired the next three hitters to get OSU out of the jam.

In the eighth, though, the Bruins scored seven times on four hits off Baldwin and Nathan Pendley to take an 8-6 lead. The inning included three wild pitches - including one on a third strike - plus homers given up by both Baldwin and Pendley. OSU also helped keep the inning alive by trying to cut down a run at the plate on a groundball that could have become the second out of the inning and emptied the bases with OSU still up 6-4.

Oregon State again fought back in the ninth, though, this time regaining the lead with three runs. Calderon began the inning with a single for his career high-tying fourth hit of the game, then Jarvis' bouncer got past first base for a two-base error put the tying runs in scoring position with none out.

Biles evened the game with a double down the rightfield line, pushing his OSU career record for two-base hits to 46. Pietsch sacrificed Biles to third, and Mathews lined a single to left to put Oregon State back up 9-8.

UCLA put its first two runners aboard in the bottom of the ninth, though, and Ryan McCarthy's one-out single up the middle tied the game. OSU righthander Jared Sanders got Matt Thayer to bounce into an inning-ending double play, though, to send the game into extra innings.

OSU did get two runners aboard with one out in the 10th, but Silva got through a scoreless inning. The bottom of the 10th began with Hector Ambriz's pinch-hit single to right; he was sacrificed to second and then wild-pitched to third. After a pair of intentional walks to load the bases, Mike Ekstrom relieved Sanders; Billy Susdorf then ended the game with a run-scoring single down the rightfield line.
