May 4, 2003
LOS ANGELES - Caitlin Benyi homered twice while Emily Zaplatosch also homered and senior Toria Auelua hit a walk-off homer in her final Easton Stadium at-bat as the second-ranked Bruins completed their 2003 home schedule with a 9-1 victory over Oregon State on Sunday at Easton Stadium. UCLA improves to 43-5, 15-3 Pac-10, while OSU falls to 31-27, 4-14 Pac-10.
The Bruins, just 45 minutes after wrapping up a 10-2 victory from Saturday's suspended game, came out swinging at the start of Sunday's regularly scheduled contest. Natasha Watley opened the game with a bunt single, followed by a Benyi bomb to dead center field to give UCLA a 2-0 lead. With one out, Claire Sua smacked a single to center and came home two batters later when Zaplatosch banged her eighth homer of the season, also into center field.
Auelua followed with a two-out double to center field. Monique Mejia singled to left, advancing Auelua to third. Mejia promptly stole second base, with Auelua scoring when the throw sailed into center field. Mejia came across on a single by Andrea Duran, giving UCLA a 6-0 lead after one inning.
The Bruins increased the lead to 7-0 in the third inning when Auelua's sacrifice fly to left field brought home Stephanie Ramos, who opened the frame with a double down the right field line. The UCLA margin reached 8-0 in the fourth inning when Benyi knocked the first pitch over the center field wall, her second homer of the game and seventh of the season.
Oregon State posted their lone run in the top of the fifth when right field Steph Adams sent Michelle Turner's pitch over the left field wall to make the score 8-1. UCLA completed the run-rule victory in the bottom of the fifth when Auelua knocked a two-out pitch over the right field wall for her fifth homer of the season and in the senior's final Easton Stadium at-bat in a Bruin uniform.
Michelle Turner went the distance, allowing just two hits and one run in five innings to improve to 12-0 on the season. Benyi led UCLA's offense with a 3-for-3, three RBI effort. Auelua went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs while Zaplatosch was 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the win. Dena DuBois (2-5) took the loss for OSU, allowing 12 hits and nine runs, eight of which were earned, in 4 2/3 innings.
