Big Inning Lifts Beavers To Win In Finale At UCLA, 7-6

May 4, 2003

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Two-run homers by Seth Pietsch and Chris Kunda keyed a six-run second inning as Oregon State beat UCLA 7-6 in Pacific-10 baseball Sunday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The Beaver bullpen shut down the Bruins over the final two innings to preserve the win, giving OSU the one-run win after it had taken a pair of one-run losses in the first two games of the series.

OSU (19-24 overall, 5-13 Pac-10) now has seven days off before Arizona State visits Goss Stadium at Coleman Field for a Pacific-10 series. The teams will meet May 12 at 5 p.m., May 13 at 5 p.m.and May 14 at 4 p.m.; all three games can be heard on KEJO-AM (1240).

'With a win, you feel a lot better,' said OSU head coach Pat Casey, whose team had lost four one-run decisions in its last five Pac-10 games. 'Now we hope that will carry us over.'

When early five-run leads against UCLA (22-26, 7-8) hadn't proved large enough in the series' first two games, a six-run lead proved big enough on Sunday. Bouncing back from a pair of tough defeats, OSU pounded UCLA's David Johnson - making his first start of the season - for all six runs in the second inning.

Andy Jarvis' single and Pietsch's ninth homer of the year started the scoring. After the bottom two hitters in the order, Billy Munich and Brad Mellinger, sinled with one out, Jacoby Ellsbury unloaded a two-run single to right to make it 4-0. Kunda followed with his fourth homer of the season for the 6-0 lead.

That gave senior righthander Stephen Copeland a cushion, and he took advantage. Coming off a start in which he'd lasted into just the second inning against Southern California last week, Copeland pitched 5 2/3 innings and allowed a powerful Bruin lineup five runs (all earned) on eight hits and three walks while striking out four.

'Our hitters did a real good job of getting us the lead early,' Copeland said. 'It's easier to pich when you're ahead like that; you can make a mistake and still have a lead.'

Copeland left the game after allowing a two-run single to Brett McMillan in the bottom of the sixth that made it 7-5. Noel Clark got the final out to preserve that lead; when Clark allowed an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh, it was Ty Kline getting the final out to keep OSU in front 7-6.

Nathan Pendley got sandwiched two outs around Christian Lewis' infield single in the ninth, then Andy Baldwin got the final out after a groundout and a wild pitch had put pinch runner Josh Roenicke just 90 feet away with the tying run.

'The guys in the pen did a great job coming back off two rough games,' said Copeland, who improved his record to 4-5 this season. Baldwin earned his third save.
