MacKenzie's Pitching Gem Beats UW 6-2
May 4, 2003
PULLMAN, Wash. -- Behind starter Aaron MacKenzie's first complete game of the season and back-to-back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, Washington State notched a 6-2 win against Washington in Pacific-10 Conference action Sunday at Bailey-Brayton Field.
MacKenzie (4-4) tossed 144 pitches and struck-out nine batters, while allowing two runs (one earned) and six hits in recording the win for WSU (15-31 overall, 5-13 Pac-10). Clay Johnson (5-3) threw five innings, surrendering six runs and six hits in the losing effort for Washington (31-14, 8-7).
The Cougar bats also came alive in a three home run barrage off Johnson in the sixth.
Jeremy Farrar led off the inning with his fourth homer of the season, a shot to left center field. Grant Richardson followed with his team-leading 11th blast of the season, this one over the wall in right center field. Wes Falkenborg then smacked his second of the season, which also cleared the right center field wall. It was the first time this season that WSU has had consecutive batters hit home runs.
Richardson and Justin Hart led WSU with two hits each. Richardson has now hit home runs in four consecutive games - the second time this season he has done so. He has eight home runs in his last 14 games. Brent Lillibridge led the Huskies with two hits, as well.
The Cougars never trailed and took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third, their first lead of the three-game series.
In the bottom of the fourth, WSU added two more runs. Farrar was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a single by Richardson. He then scored on a wild pitch by Johnson. Richardson scored two batters later on Johnson's second wild pitch of the inning, giving the Cougars a 3-0 lead.
In the WSU sixth, David Dowling replaced Johnson after Falkenborg's homer and retired the next three Cougar batters in order.
The Huskies scored single runs in the seventh and eighth, cutting the Cougar lead to 6-2. But MacKenzie allowed just one hit in the ninth - a one-out single to Tila Reynolds - before putting down the side to finish the game.
WSU completes its seven-game home stand next week with a three-game series against Sacramento State. First pitch Friday is set for 2 p.m.
