Five-Run Fifth Helps No. 4 Cal State Fullerton For 8-2 Victory

ANAHEIM - Kyle Boyer went 2-for-4 with three RBI while Darric Merrell threw four shutout innings in relief Monday and the No. 4 Cal State Fullerton Titans defeated the USC Trojans, 8-2, in non-conference action at Edison International Field.
Cal State Fullerton improves to 39-11 overall while USC has lost four straight and is now 25-23 overall.
In a game that featured wood bats, the Trojans opened up with a run in the first on an RBI double by freshman catcher Jeff Clement off the wall in right center to score Anthony Lunetta. The Titans tied it in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Boyer.
CSF broke the game open with five runs on only one hit in the fifth. With a runner at first, USC starter Jordan Olson (3-1) hit Justin Smyres and Shane Costa to load the bases. Boyer hit an RBI infield single to score a run and Olson's third hit batter of the inning (Richie Burgos) knocked him out of the game. P.J. Pilittere grounded out to short for another run and the final two runs of the inning scored on a wild pitch by reliever Josh Rummonds on ball four to Kurt Suzuki.
The Trojans will not play again until Tuesday (May 13) when they host Loyola Marymount at 6 p.m. at Dedeaux Field. USC will then play Washington State in a Pac-10 Conference series, beginning on Friday (May 16) at 6 p.m. The series will continue with 1 p.m. starts on Saturday (May 17) and Sunday (May 18). All four games will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com while Friday's game will be tape delayed on FOX Sports Net.
