No. 1 Arizona Outlasts No. 9 Cal

May 5, 2003

BERKELEY - A two-run homer by Arizona's Lovie Jung in the fifth inning sparked a four-run outburst that broke a scoreless tie as the top-ranked Wildcats defeated No. 9 Cal, 6-0, Monday afternoon at Levine-Fricke Field.

With the win, Arizona improves to 48-4 overall and 17-1 in the Pac-10. Cal falls to 40-16 and 9-9.

The Golden Bears' only real scoring threat came in the second inning. Haley Woods was hit by a pitch and was replaced by pinch runner Linzi Wescott. Jessica Pamanian's single to left followed by a ground ball out at first put runners at second and third with two outs. But Arizona pitcher Alicia Hollowell was able to force a pop-up to end the inning.

Arizona had runners on base in six of the game's seven innings, but were unable to break into the scoring column until the fifth. With one out, Wendy Allen walked and Jung followed by taking the first pitch she saw over the right centerfield fence. A walk to Mackenzie Vandergeest and a double by Jackie Coburn put runners on second and third bringing Kristina Thorson in from the bullpen. Shelly Schultz singled to right knocking in both runs as the Wildcats padded their lead after gathering four runs and three hits in the inning.

Kelly Anderson (16-9) took the loss for Cal allowing four runs in 4 1/3 innings. Thorson came on in relief in the fifth before Cassie Bobrow threw the final frame for the Bears.

Hollowell went the distance for the Wildcats in improving her record to 33-3. She posted the complete game shutout while allowing four hits while striking out five.

The game was originally scheduled to be played last Friday, but was postponed due to rain.

California returns to action this weekend for its final regular season games. The Bears play at Oregon Friday, May 9 at 2 p.m., before heading to face Oregon State Saturday, May 5 in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
