Holts Named Pac-10 Men's Track Athlete of Week
May 6, 2003
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The University of Oregon men's and women's track and field teams received their third Pacific-10 Conference Athlete of the Week honor in 2003 as redshirt sophomore Brett Holts was named the Men's Track Athlete of the Week Tuesday.
The Bend, Ore., native scored a four-second steeplechase personal best in the Cardinal Invitational (8:48.81) last Friday, May 2. The new Pac-10 season leader, Holts also moved to 16th nationally this week in the event.
Last fall in cross country, Holts improved 53 places in his NCAA harrier return and earned All-America honors (43rd, 30:38) for the fifth-place Ducks. He was a Pac-10 XC All-Academic Honorable Mention last fall, and earned similar honors last track season. Last season in the Pac-10 Track & Field Championships, Holts improved one place on his pre-meet seeding to take fourth (9:03.32) and outkicked the returning Pac-10 champion.
Holts is the third Duck male honored this season in only the fourth edition of the weekly honor. Last week (Mon., 4/28), junior Adam Jenkins was selected in the field event category after he leap-frogged teammate John Stiegeler to the top of the Pac-10 javelin rankings, thanks to his three-foot personal and six-foot, seven-inch season best in the Oregon Invitational (second, 221-4). The two-time Pac-10 finalist Jenkins now ranks eighth all-time for the Ducks in an event that has featured 22 All-Americans and seven NCAA champions. Redshirt senior Adam Kriz claimed his first conference award two weeks prior in the inaugural honor for his then-personal best in the Pepsi Team Invitational (first, 217-10). Kriz has upped his personal best in two other meets outdoors this year, and currently stands fifth on the Oregon all-time charts with his current best from the Oregon Invitational (219-9).
Besides Jenkins and Kriz, four other current Ducks have combined for eight Pac-10 honors the past three seasons - current seniors Santiago Lorenzo (Pac-10 Champs Decathlon 5/01, first, 7,617; Texas Relays 4/01, decathlon, first, 7,726; 2000 Texas Relays 4/00, decathlon third, 7,580) and John Stiegeler (Texas Relays 4/02, javelin, first, 242-11; Texas Relays 4/01, javelin, second, 245-9; Oregon Invite 4/01, javelin, second, 241-11), and juniors Trevor Woods (Pepsi Team Invite 4/02, pole vault, first, 18-0 1/2) and Sarah Malone (Oregon Twilight 5/01, javelin, first, 174-0).
Joining Holts on this week's conference honoree list were men's pole vaulter Yoo Kim of UCLA, women's steeplechaser Lisa Aguilera of ASU and discus thrower Chaniqua Ross of UCLA.
